The WNBA announced recently that New York Liberty rookie forward Michaela Onyenwere has earned June’s Kia WNBA Rookie of the Month award. Today, Michaela became the first Liberty rookie to garner consecutive Rookie of the Month honors in franchise history since the award was instituted in 2010.
Onyenwere, the Liberty’s sixth overall selection in the 2021 WNBA Draft, is currently leading all rookies in points per game (10.2), minutes per game (23.3), total field goals made (59) and three pointers made (25), while also sitting at No. 2 in total rebounds (48). Through her first 17 WNBA games, she is shooting 39.1% from the field, 33.8% from beyond the arc and 83.8% at the free throw line.
Michaela averaged 8.9 points and 2.5 rebounds through 10 contests in the month of June, highlighted by an 18-pont performance in New York’s win over Atlanta on June 26.
