On Tuesday, June 22, the New York Liberty will host the Chicago Sky at the Barclays Center for their first-ever Juneteenth Game which tips off at 7 p.m. ET on Amazon Prime and the YES App.
“While we have celebrated for many years, this season, we are thrilled to begin a tradition of dedicating a game night to honor Juneteenth, the oldest nationally commemorative observance of the conclusion of slavery in the United States,” said Liberty CEO Keia Clarke. “Although Congress has recently moved to establish Juneteenth as a federal holiday, it has always been a significant day for the New York Liberty, and it will continue to be celebrated as such for years to come.”
In-game entertainment elements for the night will begin with the signing of the Black National Anthem, “Lift Every Voice”. At halftime, fans will be treated to a performance by the Brooklyn United Music & Arts Drumline. The night will also feature a complimentary Juneteenth mask giveaway, a curated music list for DJs and educational information regarding the holiday and its history.
The team will also honor Topeka K. Sam, prison reform activist and founder and Executive Director of The Ladies of Hope Ministries, a local non-profit whose mission is to create alternatives to incarceration, decarceration and post incarceration opportunities by providing access to resources for education, entrepreneurship, and sustainability through advocacy.
To join the community in memorializing Juneteenth, members of the Liberty organization will have a presence at the following community events on Saturday, June 19: JuneteenthNYC in Brooklyn and The Black Home: Juneteenth Block Party in Newark, New Jersey.
