Mets offensive struggles continue as they lose 3-0 to the Marlins

The Mets offensive woes continued in today’s matchup against the Marlins. They had only 3 hits, with 4 runners left on base and struck out 13 times. Believe it or not, the Mets’ best player on offense is none other than pitching ace Jacob deGrom. He’s hitting .600 in 2 games, which is by far better than anyone else on the team, followed by Brandon Nimmo who hits .412. The Mets are struggling mightily at the plate and it is the main reason why they have been losing close games.

Jacob deGrom was on the mound for the Mets this afternoon, and he made his presence known, as he always does. DeGrom had 4 strikeouts in the top of the 2nd inning, when Marlins rookie Jazz Chisholm crushed a homer to right field. That was the only run scored by the Marlins while deGrom was on the mound, as he continued to pitch until the 8th inning, where he finished with 15 strikeouts.

As soon as closer, Edwin Diaz, relieved deGrom, the game started to get out of hand. They scored in the first two at bats, as Jesus Aguilar drove in a runner. Three at bats later, Miguel Rojas gets a blooper to fall, bringing another man home. The Marlins led 3-0 going into the bottom of the 9th where the Mets put up minimal effort with a 1-2-3 inning to end the game.

The Mets have scored only 5 total runs in their last 3 games, which although it is early in the season, is a bit concerning. Fortunately for them, there is a ton of baseball to play and a lot of time to start picking it up. It would be ideal for the Mets to get going sooner rather than later, as the NL East is always close in competition and that is the same deal this season. Starting pitching hasn’t been a problem for the Mets, it’s their inability to hit with runners in scoring position, and unfortunately their inability to hit the ball in general when deGrom is on the mound.
