It was an action packed Isobel Cup Championship that led to the Boston Pride taking on the Minnesota Whitecaps and the conclusion of the NWHL Tournament turned out to be a good one, as the Pride skated to a 4-3 victory on Sunday.
Boston becomes the first team in NWHL history to win the Isobel Cup Twice, as the team were able to earn the Cup back during the 2016 season. One of the stars from both 2016 and for this years squad was Captain Jillian Dempsey, who won the MVP of the Tournament. Dempsey tallied the second of the team’s three unanswered goals, while also finishing the 2021 season with nine points.
Both teams showed some impressive scoring opportunities as the Whitecaps shined throughout the tournament as well. Allie Thunstrom was able to tally the first goal of the game, showing off her speed and finding the back of the cage at the 7:29 mark.
Boston took a two goal lead thanks to marks by Dempsey and Mary Parker. The Pride added one more thanks to a Power Play opportunity by Lexie Laing made the score 3-1. Minnesota kept fighting to stay in the game as Thurnstrom found the back of the net for the second time in the game. Boston regained the lead when Taylor Wenczkowski made the game 4-2.
Minnesota made the game 4-3 thanks to a goal by Meaghan Pezon, but the Pride’s defense stood tall and kept the Whitecaps off the board to earn their second Isobel Cup Championship.
The NWHL will start gearing up for the 2021 Season and continuing to bring an exciting brand of hockey to fans everywhere for a long time.
