It was a thriller at the PPL Center, but the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins were able to earn a 5-4 overtime victory over the Lehigh Valley Phantoms.
Recording his first goal for the Penguins was Frederick Gaudreau, which turned out to be the overtime winner.
These two teams showed why they are amongst the best in the AHL, as they were able to skate and play well against each other.
Wilkes-Barre/Scranton tallied the first goal of the game at the 9:11 mark as Felix Sandstrom was able to find the back of the cage.
Max Willman tied things up for Lehigh Valley, who netted one in from a spinning pass by Zayde Wisdom.
The Penguins were able to respond quickly thanks to a goal by Jordy Bellerive 69 seconds into the following period. Lehigh Valley were able to tie things up with a goal by Willman and gained a 3-2 lead thanks to a power-play goal by Ryan Fitzgerald.
Nick Schilkey was able to tip-in a rifle of an attempt by Billy Sweezey to help the Penguins regain the offensive momentum, Wilkes-Barre increased their lead to 4-3 thanks to a goal by Sam Miletic.
Playing well in the cage for Wilkes-Barre/Scranton was Shane Starrett who had 21 saves in his debut with the team.
Wilkes-Barre/Scranton will return home to the Mohegan Sun Arena at Casey Plaza on March 3, when they play host to the Syracuse Crunch. The action between these two teams is set for 5:00 p.m.
