The St. John’s Women’s Basketball team will look to end the 2020-21 regular season with a victory at home as it welcomes Seton Hall to Carnesecca Arena for a 7 p.m. meeting.
The contest between the Red Storm (7-13, 4-11 BIG EAST) and the Pirates (13-6, 11-5 BIG EAST) will be broadcast live on FS1 with John Fanta and Kim Adams on the call from Queens.
The Johnnies will clinch the no. 7 seed with a victory over Seton Hall regardless of other outcomes around the league. With a loss, the Red Storm will fall to the no. 8 seed in next week’s BIG EAST Tournament at Mohegan Sun Arena in Uncasville, Conn.
After splitting a pair of home contests last week with Providence and Georgetown, St. John’s will look to climb back to .500 at Carnesecca Arena this season. The Red Storm enters Monday’s matchup following a narrow overtime setback to Georgetown on Wednesday. Trailing by two, 53-51, with under a minute to play in regulation, Kadaja Bailey finished at the rim for the Red Storm to knot the score at 53 and force the extra period. The Johnnies jumped ahead by two in the early minutes of overtime before the visiting Hoyas used a 6-0 run to seal the victory.
Unique Drake had the best outing of her St. John’s career against the Hoyas, scoring 22 points on 8-of-19 shooting, including a 3-for-6 showing from beyond the arc. Drake led the way offensively for the Red Storm over its 1-1 week, averaging 19.5 points per game on a 53 percent shooting from the floor, including a 50 percent mark from three-point range. Over the Johnnies’ two games last week, Drake also recorded 3.0 assists, 3.0 rebounds and 2.0 steals per contest.
Raven Farley joined Drake in double figures for the Johnnies against Georgetown, netting 15 points on 7-of-12 shooting. The game marked the sixth time this season that Farley has finished in double-digit scoring for St. John’s. The Elizabeth, N.J., native also grabbed seven boards to go along with a team-high three blocks.
Monday will mark the 83rd all-time meeting between St. John’s and Seton Hall with the Johnnies leading the series, 49-33. In their first meeting on Jan. 20 at Walsh Gymnasium, the Pirates came away with an 87-64 victory over the Johnnies behind a 30-point performance from Andra Espinoza-Hunter. A trio of Johnnies finished with double-figures in the scoring column, as Qadashah Hoppie led the way with 18 points.
Seton Hall enters Monday’s contest riding a four-game winning streak. Espinoza-Hunter leads the Pirates offensively and ranks third in the league averaging 19.2 points per game. The 5-foot-11 guard has been dangerous from beyond the arc this season, knocking down a BIG EAST-best 3.3 three-pointers per game.
