Despite a career-high 22-point performance from Unique Drake, the St. John’s Women’s Basketball team dropped its second overtime contest of the season on Wednesday, falling to Georgetown, 62-58, at Carnesecca Arena.
Trailing by two, 53-51, with under a minute to play in regulation, Kadaja Bailey finished at the rim for the Red Storm to knot the score at 53 and force the extra period. The Johnnies jumped ahead by two in the early minutes of overtime before the vising Hoyas used a 6-0 run to seal the victory.
Drake led St. John’s (7-13, 4-11 BIG EAST) in scoring for the second-straight game, netting a career-best 22 points to go along with four assists and four rebounds. She also grabbed a pair of steals in 45 minutes of action. The Columbia, S.C., native has reached double figures in three of the Johnnies’ last four outings.
Drake was one of two players to finish in double figures, as Raven Farley netted 15 points on 7-of-12 shooting from the floor. The senior forward also grabbed seven rebounds and three blocks in 42 minutes of action.
Bailey fell just shy of a double-double, chipping in nine points while also grabbing nine rebounds against Georgetown.
Both programs came out firing on Wednesday afternoon, as the Johnnies and Hoyas traded blows in the opening seconds of the game. With the Red Storm leading by one, Georgetown (2-13, 2-13 BIG EAST) unleashed a 11-2 run to take over the lead, 14-5, forcing St. John’s to call a timeout.
Coming out of the huddle, the Johnnies fired off seven-straight points to cut the Hoyas’ lead down to two, 14-12. Over the final three minutes of the first quarter, the visiting team managed to build its lead back up to six, 24-18, after 10 minutes of action.
One minute and 15 seconds into the second stanza, the visiting Hoyas grew their lead to double digits, 28-18. St. John’s trimmed its deficit down to five twice over the next few minutes.
With the Hoyas leading by seven, 32-25, Farley found the bottom of the basket two times over the final 1:25, as the Red Storm entered the locker room trailing by three, 32-29.
Leilani Correa, who had been quiet through the first 20 minutes of action, drained a triple to open up the third quarter and knot the score at 32. The Johnnies and Hoyas traded buckets over the next four minutes, before St. John’s used a 6-2 run to take a one-point advantage, 43-42, into the final frame.
With the Johnnies growing their lead to three, 47-44, two minutes into the fourth quarter, Georgetown made a 7-0 run to jump ahead by four, 51-47. The Red Storm responded with a 6-2 run over the remainder of regulation to tie the game at 53 and force the extra period.
The Johnnies pulled ahead by as many as two, 58-56, with 2:11 remaining in the game. That was as close as the Red Storm would get as Georgetown closed out the game on a 6-0 run.
The Johnnies will return to action on Feb. 27, as the team travels to Omaha, Neb. for a 2 p.m. meeting with Creighton. The contest between the Red Storm and Bluejays will be broadcast on FS1.
