Washington Capitals soar against Sabres, 3-1

The Washington Capitals was able to continue their positive play with a 3-1 victory over the Buffalo Sabres in NHL action on Thursday night.

One of the stars of the game for Washington was keeper Vitek Vanecek made 22 saves, for his seventh save of the season. Vanecek is now tied for the most victories among rookie NHL netminders.

Vanecek has been able to stop 63 of 65 shots that he has been able to see over the last seven periods, which is good for a .969 save percentage.

The victory for the Capitals is a great way for them to start off their five-game homestand, the team has also played well against the Sabres they now have four victories in five games against Buffalo this season.

For the Sabres, they are in the process of trying to figure out how to regain their winning ways, as they dropped their fourth straight game, as the team has managed one goal during this span.

These two teams played a great brand of hockey, with some back-and-forth action between the two. The Capitals and Sabres were able to generate many scoring opportunities between the two, making for a great game to watch.

Nicklas Backstrom, Tom Wilson and Conor Sheary all recorded goals for the Capitals, while Victor Olofsson was the lone goal scorer for the Sabres.

Backstrom continues to lead the Capitals offense with his 20 points in 15 games, the Washington center is on a five-game point streak with his three goals and four assists.

Helping to set up Backstrom on his goal was Washington Captain Alex Ovechkin, who now has 1,292 points in his career.

For Wilson, he was able to record a goal on a shorthanded opportunity, which will be the fifth for his career. Wilson has been able to score at least one shorty in each of the last four seasons.

To cap off the scoring for Washington was Sheary, who was able to get the game-winner with his second goal in as many games. Conor now has 10 points (6g, 4a) in 14 career games against the Sabers.

There was a milestone moment during Sheary’s goal as helping to set up the game-winner was Lars Eller, who had the primary assist on the scoring opportunity. That assist marks 300 career points in the Danish-born players NHL career.

For Buffalo Linus Ullmark was able to make 18 saves and had some wonderful opportunities throughout that were denied by the post. Sam Reinhart was the first one to hit the pipes at the 5:13 mark and Jeff Skinner followed with another at the 6:50 mark.

Olofsson was the only Sabres player that was able to figure out how to get a goal in the back of the Capitals cage, which was his sixth goal of the season. Victor now leads the team in goals and is tied with captain Jack Eichel for the team lead in points (12).

Both the Capitals and the Sabres have days off before they next go into action.

For the Capitals they will next host the New York Rangers in a game on Saturday that is set for 12:30 p.m.

As for the Sabres they will continue their road trip, as the team will now head to New Jersey to take on the Devils in a game on Saturday that is set for 12:30 p.m.
