St. John’s Women’s Basketball Leilani Correa Named BIG EAST Player of the Week

After averaging 32.0 points per game in a 1-1 week for the Red Storm, Leilani Correa has been named the BIG EAST Player of the Week, it was announced today by the league office.

Correa, who has earned a spot on the BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll four times this season, averaged 32.0 points, 3.0 assists, 2.0 steals and 2.0 rebounds per game on the week.

On Monday at Villanova, Correa scored a game-high 29 points in the Red Storm’s overtime setback to the Wildcats. The sophomore guard was the engine behind the Johnnies’ 22-5 run in the fourth quarter, scoring 11 points in the final 8:10 of regulation to force the extra period.

Two days later, Correa matched a career-high with 35 points on 11-of-22 shooting from the floor, as the Red Storm picked up its second BIG EAST victory of the season at Georgetown. Correa’s 35-point outing is the most by a BIG EAST player this season, and a feat she has achieved twice this year after racking up 35 points at Delaware on Dec. 10. Correa has reached the 30-point mark three times this season and six times over her Red Storm career.

Entering the week, Correa sits second in the league in scoring with 20.0 points per game, good enough to rank 28th overall in the NCAA.

Correa and the Red Storm will return to action on Wednesday when the team travels to Storrs, Conn., for a 6:30 p.m. matchup with No. 3/4 Connecticut on SNY.
