It took a while for the Fordham University Women’s Basketball offense to get started against Saint Louis, but the team overcame adversity and hustled to a 72-63 victory on the road. The team was able to match its season-high in points, while also knocking down the third-most three pointers in schools history.
With the win the Rams improve to a 7-3 overall mark and 4-2 in A-10 Conference play, while St. Louis falls to a 2-1 and 0-1 mark.
Fordham started the game on Sunday scoring five points, on 2-of-18 shooting in the opening quarter. As always though the Rams stellar defensive play stepped up and were able to hold the Billikens offense. It was in the second quarter as Kaitlyn Downey and Anna DeWolfe were able to hit shots from beyond the arc in the first two minutes.
The action was back-and-forth between the Rams and the Billikens, as the host team eventually were able to run their lead to double figures. Eventually the offense started to click for the Rams, and the team was able to find the winning formula on how to beat Saint Louis.
Momentum swung when Downey grabbed an offensive rebound that led to a DeWolfe three-pointer, which got the deficit back to single digits. Kendell Heremaia was able to connect on a pretty midrange attempt. Some stellar defense by DeWolfe led to a Fastbreak layup, and gave the Rams a 27-22 lead with 3:10 on the clock.
Fordham continued to add on thanks to the combination of Downey and DeWolfe on the next offensive possession. Heremaia was able to connect on a three pointer, after Matilda Flood was able to battle for a huge offensive rebound. To cap off the offensive run Katie McLoughlin was able to record what proved to be the go-ahead basket for Fordham.
The Rams were able to eventually outshoot the Billikens 40.6% to 37.1%, while hitting 13-31 three-pointers, which is tied for third-most makes in school’s history and the second-most on the road. For the 10th straight game, the Rams were able to win the rebounding battle by a tally of 42-35, which included a 12-10 margin on the offensive end.
DeWolfe was able to lead all offensive scoring with her 26 points, while Downey followed with 24. Heremia rounded out all Rams scoring with her 14 points.
Fordham will now return to Rose Hill Gym for two games next weekend. The First will be hosting St. Bonaventure on Friday, January 22, at 2:00 p.m.
