Hofstra University alum Jay Hernandez has been named the head coach of the Greensboro Swarm for the upcoming NBA G League bubble starting in February at the ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex at the Walt Disney World Resort near Orlando, Florida. In addition, fellow Hofstra alum Norman Richardson will serve as an assistant coach with the Swarm. Greensboro serves as the NBA G League affiliate of the Charlotte Hornets of the NBA.
Hernandez will join the Swarm for the start of the team’s training camp and will return to the Hornets bench at the conclusion of the Swarm’s season. Hernandez, who serves as a Hornets assistant coach and director of player development, has been a member of Head Coach James Borrego’s staff since 2018.
Hernandez played three seasons at Hofstra, helping lead the program to three straight postseason berths. During his three seasons in a Pride uniform, Hofstra compiled a stellar 72-22 record. In 1998-99 Hofstra won 22 games and advanced to the National Invitational Tournament. The next season would see the Pride win 24 games and return to the NCAA Tournament for the first time since the 1977 season. In Hernandez’s senior campaign of 2000-01, Hofstra went 26-5 and made its second straight NCAA Tournament appearance.
During his three-year Hofstra career, Hernandez tallied 986 points, 296 assists, 203 rebounds, and 126 steals. He played in 94 games and made 88 starts. He also drained 162 three-pointers during his Pride tenure. He ranks 10th all-time in program history in three-pointers made.
Richardson was a staple of the Hofstra men’s basketball team from 1997 to 2001. During his time at Hofstra, Richardson helped the Pride to three consecutive postseason trips, including back-to-back NCAA Tournament appearances after winning the America East Conference championship in 2000 and 2001, and an NIT appearance in 1999.
Richardson was named Honorable Mention All-America his senior season, in addition to being named the America East Conference Player of the Year and winning the Haggerty Award as the top player in the New York Area. He currently ranks 11th all-time at Hofstra in points scored (1,677) and sixth in three-point field goals made (192).
Richardson joins the Swarm after being an assistant coach for the Indiana Pacers affiliate, the Fort Wayne Mad Ants, for three seasons (2017-19).
