George Washington’s Battle Earns A-10 Men’s Basketball Player of the Week, Amzil Selected as Rookie of the Week

The Atlantic 10 Conference has named George Washington sophomore Jamison Battle A-10 Player of the Week. Dayton freshman Mustapha Amzil was selected as the league’s Rookie of the Week. The awards were announced Monday and are for games played Dec. 28 – Jan. 3.

Battle averaged 23.3 points per game in a 2-1 week for the Colonials, shooting 54.2 percent from the field. The forward from Robbinsdale, Minn., scored a career high 29 points in a win versus Duquesne. He made nine 3-pointers on the week (3.0 per game), including career-high tying six against the Dukes. Battle also averaged 5.0 rebounds per game on the week and averaged 37.8 minutes per game in three games.

Amzil joined the Flyers after the first semester, and scored 22 points and grabbed seven rebounds in his first game against La Salle. In an eight-minute stretch he scored he scored 17 consecutive points for Dayton. It was the second-most points by a freshman in his Dayton debut and the most in 14 years. A forward from Helsinki, Finland, he followed that up with 15 points, six rebounds, four assists and three steals against George Mason. Amzil averaged 18.5 points, 6.5 rebounds, 2.0 assists and 1.5 steals in the two games.

Davidson freshman Sam Mennenga scored 13 points on 6-of-13 (.462) shooting in Davidsons game against Richmond … Marcus Weathers averaged 16.5 points, including grabbing a 19-point, 12-rebounds double-double in the second game against GW … Duquesne freshman Toby Okani scored 14 points on a perfect 6-of-6 shooting in the Dukes’ win over George Washington in their first meeting … George Mason’s Jordan Miller put together two strong games, scoring 25 points with five assists in a double overtime win at UMass, followed by a 15-point performance at Dayton … Mason freshman Tyler Kolek averaged 17.5 points for the Patriots, with 19 points at UMass in the double OT win and 16 points at Dayton … George Washington’s James Bishop had a career high 23 points at Fordham, and hit the game-winning 3-pointer in the second Duquesne game to lead the Colonials to a pair of A-10 wins … Sherif Kenney averaged 16.0 points per game off the bench for La Salle, scoring a team-high 14 points in the thrilling 67-65 win over Dayton … La Salle freshman Jhamir Brickus totaled 11 points in La Salle’s win over Dayton, then tallied 10 assists in the win over Fordham … Rhode Island’s Fatts Russell had 20 points in an overtime win against Saint Joseph’s, dishing out eight assists, grabbing five steals and shooting a perfect 10-of-10 at the line, including the game-tying free throws at the end of regulation … Kyle Lofton led St. Bonaventure to a key league win over Richmond, scoring 16 points and dishing out three assists against the Spiders … Taylor Funk averaged 19.5 points and 6.5 rebounds for Saint Joseph’s, finishing with a career-best 29 points in the overtime battle at Rhody.
