St. John’s Men’s Basketball to Close Non-Conference Play with Rider on Tuesday

The St. John’s Men’s Basketball team will play the final scheduled non-conference game of the season on Tuesday night, welcoming the Rider Broncs to Carnesecca Arena for a 7 p.m. contest.

The game will be broadcast live nationally on CBS Sports Network with Jason Horowitz and Pete Gillen on the call.  570 AM WMCA will carry the game over the airwaves in New York City with John Minko and Vin Parise delivering the call from Queens. The Learfield-IMG College Red Storm Sports Network radio broadcast will also be available through TuneIn Radio, as well as SiriusXM channel 389 and streamed through channel 979.

St. John’s (4-1) will look to wrap the non-conference portion of its schedule with a win after using a late first-half surge to sink Stony Brook on Sunday afternoon.  Trailing by six with five minutes remaining in the opening half, the Johnnies closed the stanza on a 22-2 run before scoring the first eight points of the second half and effectively putting the game out of reach.

St. John’s is 11-1 in non-conference games at Carnesecca Arena under Mike Anderson and 38-6 overall during the regular season against non-league foes since 2017-18.

Julian Champagnie was named to the BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll on Monday morning after averaging 23.3 points and 6.0 rebounds in his first three appearances of the season.  The Brooklyn native tallied a career-high 29 points and 10 boards against Boston College before netting 25 against BYU and finishing the week with 16 points, four assists and three steals against Stony Brook.  Dating back to last season, Champagnie, a BIG EAST All-Freshman Team selection in 2019-20, has scored 21 or more points in four of his last six games.

Champagnie was one of three Johnnies to finish in double figures on Sunday against Stony Brook.  Greg Williams Jr. matched a career-high with 21 points on 8-of-11 shooting while Isaih Moore added 12 points on 5-of-8 shooting.  Both Williams and Moore played a critical role in the Red Storm’s efforts on the defensive end, as Williams set a new career-high with six steals while Moore recorded three steals and a block.

As a team, the Red Storm registered 20 steals against Stony Brook, believed to be the highest single-game total by a St. John’s squad since harassing Niagara for 21 on Dec. 22, 1993.  The program single-game record of 22 thefts was set the previous season on Dec. 1, 1992, against St. Francis Brooklyn.  A coach that has seen his teams lead the country in steals four times and finish inside the top 30 nationally on 15 separate occasions, Anderson got more steals from his St. John’s squad on Sunday than he had from any other team since Nov. 24, 2009, when his Missouri Tigers, fresh off an Elite Eight run that spring, set a school record with 24 against Chattanooga.  Stony Brook’s 29 total turnovers were the highest total by a St. John’s opponent since the 2005-06 season opener, when Maryland Eastern Shore coughed up the ball 30 times.

Rider (0-1) will play its second game of the season after falling to Syracuse, 87-52, at the Carrier Dome on Saturday.  Incarnate Word transfer Dwight Murray Jr., the only Bronc to finish in double figures, led the way with 20 points.

Rider finished third in the MAAC regular season standings a year ago, but returns just four letter winners from that squad.  Sophomore guard Christian Ings, who tallied nine points against the Orange on Saturday, is the Broncs’ leading returning scorer from 2019-20 at 4.9 points per game.

St. John’s and Rider will meet for the 12th time in a series history that dates back to 1930.  The Johnnies are 11-0 all-time against the Broncs, but the teams have met just once since 1951, a 10-point win for the Red Storm in the 1995 Holiday Festival.
