St. John’s Women’s Basketball to Kick off BIG EAST Action with Villanova

Coming off a 38-point victory over Saint Peter’s on Tuesday afternoon, the St. John’s women’s basketball team will open up BIG EAST play on Sunday evening, welcoming Villanova to Carnesecca Arena for a 7 p.m. matchup.

The contest between the Johnnies and the Wildcats will be available to live stream at Flohoops.com, with John Fanta and Sky Lindsay on the call from Queens.

St. John’s (2-0), who was picked fourth overall in the league’s preseason poll, enters conference play with a record of 2-0 after topping both Fairleigh Dickinson and Saint Peter’s to open the 2020-21 campaign. In the Johnnies most recent victory over the Peacocks, the squad set a new program record for blocks, recording 16 rejections.

As a team, the Red Storm’s defense has locked in on the court, holding both its opponents to under 50 points. The Johnnies limited FDU and Saint Peter’s to a combined 3-of-38 (.079 percent) from beyond the arc.

Five Johnnies are averaging double figures this season, led by sophomore guard Leilani Correa at 17.5 points per game. The All-BIG EAST Preseason selection is also averaging 4.0 rebounds and 3.0 assists per contest. Northwest Florida transfer Rayven Peeples wasted no time getting acclimated to the Red Storm program, as she is boasting 14.5 points and 7.5 rebounds per game. The Detroit native went off for a career-high 22 points and five blocks in the Johnnies’ last outing with Saint Peter’s on Tuesday.

The guard duo of Kadaja Bailey and Unique Drake are both averaging 11.0 points per game. Drake is also coming off a career-high performance for the Red Storm, with 16 points on a 6-of-10 shooting from the floor, including 3-of-4 from three-point range. Raven Farley rounds out the Johnnies’ contingent of double-figure scorers at 10.5 points per contest.

This will mark the 70th all-time meeting between the two programs, with Villanova leading the series, 41-28. St. John’s will look to enact a bit of revenge in Sunday’s showdown, after the Wildcats swept the regular-season series last year, winning both games in overtime.

Villanova enters Sunday’s contest on the heels of its third-straight victory, as the Wildcats defeated Temple, 90-72, on Friday afternoon. In Villanova’s win over the Owls, reigning BIG EAST Freshman of the Year Maddy Siegrist secured her third 20-point performance in as many games. The sophomore from Poughkeepsie, N.Y. also grabbed 12 rebounds for her third double-double of the season. Two other players joined Siegrist in double figures, as Bridget Herlihy and Sarah Mortensen registered 22 and 18 points, respectively.

Following Sunday’s game with Villanova, the Red Storm will travel to UMass to take on the Minutewomen on Dec. 13 at 2 p.m.
