The Hofstra University men’s basketball team is the favorite to repeat as Colonial Athletic Association champions according to a vote of the league’s head coaches, media representatives, and sports information directors, it was announced on Wednesday, November 11 by the conference office.
In addition, junior Isaac Kante was named to the preseason All-CAA First Team, while seniors Tareq Coburn and Jalen Ray picked up preseason honorable mention accolades.
Hofstra was picked first and received 16 first place votes, and was followed by Delaware (11), Drexel (7), Towson (4), Elon, Charleston, Northeastern, UNCW, James Madison, and William & Mary.
Hofstra finished the 2019-20 season with a 26-8 record, capturing both the regular season Colonial Athletic Association title and winning the postseason tournament to earn the program’s first NCAA Tournament berth since 2001. The Pride became only the sixth team in conference history (since 1982-83) to win back-to-back outright regular season CAA titles.
Kante earned third team All-CAA honors last season after averaging 11.4 points and 7.7 rebounds per game. The CAA leader in field goal percentage, he also ranked sixth in the league in rebounding, and 22nd in scoring while starting all 34 games. Kante also posted eight double-doubles during the 2019-20 season.
Coburn started 33 games and played in all 34 games last season, averaging 10.6 points and 5.5 rebounds per outing. A versatile player, he ranked 15th in the league in rebounding and 25th in scoring, and also among the league leaders in free throw percentage, three-point percentage, and blocked shots.
One of the top players in the league, Ray was stunningly left off either the first or second team after making 33 starts a season ago and averaging 11.9 points, 2.9 rebounds, 1.9 assists, and 1.2 steals per contest. A member of the CAA Championship All-Tournament Team, Ray ranked ninth in the CAA in three-point field goal percentage.
