Washington Spirit Win Thriller over Sky Blue FC 1-0

VIDEO: Washington Spirit Head Coach Richie Burke along with stars Ashley Hatch and Sam Stabb share these thoughts after the team’s 1-0 victory over Sky Blue FC in NWSL action on 10/3

The Fall Season for the Washington Spirit ended on a high note thanks to a 1-0 thriller over the Sky Blue FC in National Women’s Soccer League action on Saturday. Washington played an aggressive brand of soccer, creating some great chances on goal and were rewarded for their play with a victory.

Starting up the offense for the Spirit was defender Sam Staab, who launched a long ball to forward Ashley Hatch who had found space in behind the defense. Hatch drove to the net and fired a shot, but it was dealt with by Sky Blue goalkeeper Kailen Sheridan.

Washington continued to see some great chances, especially when Crystal Thomas and Ashley Sanchez combined for a great opportunity. The Spirit was able to make life difficult for Sheridan with their 11 total shots and three on the cage.

Sky Blue were not without chances of their own as Midfielders Jennifer Cudjoe, Domi Richardson, and Sarah Woldmoe started to swing the momentum on their home turf in New Jersey.  The Spirit were able to find the back of the cage thanks to a beauty of a shot by Kumi Yokoyama, turned away from her defender and sent a screamer of a shot into the bottom left corner.

The Spirit had to show some of the strongest defense that they have had to show during the 2020 Season, as Sky Blue FC did not go down without a fight.  There was one moment via a brilliant chance by Midge Purce that was denied by the defense.

Sky Blue will finish the Fall Series next weekend against the Chicago Red Stars. The match will be played at MSU Soccer Park on Saturday, October 10, at 12:30 p.m. ET. Fans can stream the match live on CBS All Access.

Washington was able to finish the Fall Series on a strong note, taking home all three points in their second away game of the year. Washington wraps the Fall Series 2-1-1 with seven points from four games and a goal difference of +1, with five goals for and four goals against.
