VIDEO: New York Mets Manager Luis Rojas along with stars Jacob deGrom and Michael Conforto share these thoughts after the team’s 18-1 victory over the Toronto Blue Jays in MLB action on 9/11
The bats are starting to get hot at the right time for the New York Mets (21-24) as they were able to blast to an 18-1 victory over the Toronto Blue Jays (24-20) in Major League Baseball action on Friday. It was in the Fourth Inning, when New York plated 10 runs that really powered the team to the victory.
One of the highlights in that 10 run inning was a grand slam by Dominic Smith, who lifted a ball to right field, to continue his fine offensive production for the team. There were also multiple defensive errors by the Blue Jays, which assisted in the victory.
In addition to Smith, the offense saw a smash by Michael Conforto and Wilson Ramos and some other great hits by J.D. Davis and Andrés Giménez.
All of this run support was to back up a stellar outing by starting pitcher Jacob deGrom, who worked six strong innings and striking out nine batters against a really good Toronto team. Traditionally the Mets have not fared very well with supporting deGrom, but in the last two starts 14 runs in his last start, marking the second time they have supported a pitcher with 14-plus runs in consecutive starts. Sid Fernandez was the beneficiary of the first such occurrence, back in 1992.
These are the types of games needed for the team if they look to contend for one of the Playoff positions in the National League East.
The climb up the standings continue for the Mets, who will look to continue this three-game series with the Jays with a game on Saturday set for 6:37 p.m. Taking the mound for New York as he looks to continue his fine series of starting pitching will be Seth Lugo (2-2, 2.05 ERA) who will take on Robbie Ray (1-4, 7.51 ERA). For Lugo, he will be pitching with six days of rest and is looking to reach the 100 pitch mark for the first time in two years. Ray will be making his third appearance and second start. The Toronto lefty has had issues with walking batters thus far this season and that is something the Mets offense can take advantage of.
Some of the players to watch for on offense against Ray will be Robinson Cano who holds a .500 batting average against the Toronto starter.
