Mets Still Not Firing on All Cylinders in 5-3 loss to Phillies

VIDEO: New York Mets stars Rick Porcello and Jared Hughes share these thoughts after the team’s 5-3 loss to the Philadelphia Phillies in Major League Baseball action on 9/4

There isn’t a ton of time left for the New York Mets (17-22) who lost a tough 5-3 decision to the Philadelphia Phillies (19-15) in Major League Baseball action on Friday. New York who is currently in Fourth Place in the National League standings could use games like these to help propel them in the standings, especially for a team who is hungry for the playoffs.

One of the trends for this 2020 Season is the fact that there has been one aspect of the team’s game that just falls flat, one night it maybe the bats, another the pitching. Either way this 2020 edition of the Mets just has not fired on all cylinders and that has led to a ton of frustration for their fans.

New York saw an error in by Dominic Smith, combined with a sloppy start by pitcher Rick Porcello, who allowed runs in the Second and Third Innings. The Mets were able to fight back thanks to a homer by Michael Conforto, who hit a two-run shot in the Fifth, to get his team back in the game.

Reliever Jared Hughes allowed consecutive two-out hits that allowed the Phillies to get back into the game, before some overall team errors by the Mets that helped to lead Philadelphia to a win.

This is the crucial part of the schedule for the Mets, who have been grinding it out as of late against some very tough opponents. It is moments like these that can define a playoff contending team, and it all depends on how the boys in Blue and Orange respond when they face the Phillies on Saturday.

Taking the mound in the second game will be Seth Lugo (1-2, 2.12 ERA) who is set to take on Spencer Howard (1-1, 5.40 ERA). The game between the Mets and Phillies is set to air on the SNY Network, with the action scheduled to start at 7:10 p.m.
