VIDEO: New York Liberty Head Coach Walt Hopkins along with stars Amanda Zahui B and Layshia Clarendon share these thoughts after the team’s 101-99 victory over the Chicago Sky in WNBA action on 8/25.
Despite going down as many as 16 points in the first half, New York fought back to earn its second victory of the season, defeating the Sky 101-99, the team’s highest scoring game this season.
The Liberty connected on 14 threes, which was a season-high and also tied the franchise record which was originally set in 2010.
New York shot 55.9% (38-68) from the field and 46.7% (14-30) from beyond the arc, which were both season-highs.
The Liberty had a season-high 26 assists, 29 rebounds, and 41 bench points.
New York had 8 players record two or more assists in the contest.
Chicago entered the game looking to extend its winning streak to four games, however, New York ended the Sky’s run tonight as well as their own 7 game losing streak.
Both teams traded baskets in the first four minutes of the game. To conclude the opening quarter, Chicago went on a 16-11 run to take a seven-point lead.
In the second quarter, Chicago opened on a 11-3 run to extend its lead to 15 with 7:23 remaining in the half.
New York went on a 5-0 run to cut the deficit to within 10, but Chicago quickly answered with a 5-0 run to recapture its 15-point advantage with 4:13 remaining in the half.
Out of a timeout, the Liberty ignited a 7-1 run to get within 9 of the Sky with 2:22 remaining in the half. The Liberty extended that run to 16-3 heading into the locker room.
New York outscored Chicago 24-20 in the second quarter.
The Liberty outscored the Sky 32-26 in the third quarter to take its first lead since the first quarter, 78-75.
New York’s 10-6 run with 6:03 remaining in the 4th quarter gave the team a 7-point lead, and despite trading baskets with Chicago, Layshia Clarendon’s two made free throws with 00:00.3 remaining in the contest gave the Liberty the edge to win the game.

Amanda Zahui B finished with a season-high 22 points on 64.3% (9-14) shooting from the field, 57.1% (4-7) from deep, 12 rebounds as well as 3 blocks and 3 steals. In the first half, Zahui B scored 14 points on 6-8 shooting from the field and 2-3 from beyond the arc.
Layshia Clarendon totaled 17 points including 5 assists and 3 rebounds. This is Layshia’s 11th game this season scoring in double figures.
Jocelyn Willoughby tied her career-high of 14 points on a perfect night of shooting from the floor, going 5-5 from the field and 3-3 from beyond the arc. French guard, Marine Johannés was the last WNBA rookie to shoot perfectly from the field (7/20/19 vs. LA).
Kiah Stokes contributed with 14 points and 3 assists, which is her third consecutive game in double-digits.
Paris Kea tied her career-high with 10 points, connecting on 50.0% (2-4) from deep.
The Louisville rookie tandem of Jazmine Jones and Kylee Shook added 9 and 8 points, respectively.
Allie Quigley’s 29-point night kept the Sky within one possession going into the final minute of play, and tied her career-high which she also got against New York (7/8/16).
