Prior to the start of the 2020 Major League Baseball season, most Mets fans were envisioning what this potent line-up would look like. Seeing names like Pete Alonso, Robinson Cano, Michael Conforto the potential of what these players could do had fans feeling excited and hopeful.
There have been glimpses of the greatness of the Mets (10-14) bats and that was shown on Monday night as the team was able to see homers from Cano and Alonso, to lift them to a 11-4 victory over the Miami Marlins (9-7) in Major League Baseball action on Monday.
Cano who has been rotated between his regular duties in the infield and playing in the newly implemented designated hitters position, has been trying to regain the form that made him such an offensive threat for the New York Yankees and some of the other stops he had prior to joining the Mets. Robinson was able to rip a two-run shot in the bottom of the third before recording a monster of a homer, that recorded 441 feet in the sixth.
With the feat Cano was able to make a little bit of history as he was able to tie Ryne Sandberg for the most multihomer games by a second baseman in Major League history.
For Alonso, he has been also struggling to regain the form that made him one of the players to watch for in his rookie season with New York. One could tell in the games early on that Pete was looking to get that big hit and hopefully now started to get the bat that he is known for back.
New York was able to see some tremendous pitching from both Robert Gsellman and Chasen Shreve, who helped to keep Miami off of the scoreboard for most of the night. The real story though is the fact that the bats of the Mets showed a bit of the potential that the fans were hoping to see prior to the start of the season.
The series between the Mets and the Marlins continues today (Tuesday) as David Peterson (3-1, 2.91 ERA) takes the mound to face Humberto Mejia (0-0, 3.86 ERA).
Manager Luis Rojas and the rest of the staff will keep an eye out for Peterson, who complained of left shoulder soreness after the last start. Meanwhile, for Rojas he has just been recalled to make this start against the Mets.
In the last outing for Mejia against the Mets the righty went 2 1/3 innings, giving up one run with six strikeouts and two walks.
The game between the Mets and Marlins is scheduled for 7:10 p.m. with the action airing on the SNY Network.
