The Baltimore Orioles (8-7) continue to show why they are going to be a team to watch in the 2020 Major League Baseball Season with a thrilling extra inning victory over the Philadelphia Phillies (5-7) on Tuesday night. Thus far the Orioles have been able to pick up some clutch hits that has helped to propel them to some big time victories.
It was a game that would cause many fans grey hairs as the two teams were tied at 8 and needed extra innings to determine a winner. With the new rules in place the Birds were able to have an automatic runner in Andrew Velazquez on second base. Austin Hays came to the plate and ripped a ball past the Phillies outfielder for what was determined to be an inside the park homer that lifted Baltimore to the thrilling victory.
Baltimore has done a tremendous job thus far of riding this 60 game season, manning the ups and downs of the season with a great energy thus far. The game against the Phillies is just one example of that as it had a bit of everything including a dropped ball, four lead changes and two blown saves.
It was a thriller in every sense of the word and the type of game that will help give the Orioles confidence as they continue in the season.
The Orioles and the Phillies continue a three-game series tonight (Wednesday) at Citizens Bank Park as lefty Wade LeBlanc (1-0, 6.91 ERA) takes on righty Zach Eflin. Game Two is scheduled for 7:05 p.m. and fans wanting to catch the action can do so on the MASN 2 Network.
Prior to the game against the Phillies the Orioles saw the return of lefty John Means from the bereavement list to the injured list. Means originally left the team to attend a family matter and missed a scheduled start against the Nationals this past weekend.
It was announced via social media that Means and his family lost his father after a very long battle with pancreatic cancer.
Means holds a 0-1 record with a 7.71 ERA this season after two stars and was the Orioles lone All-Star a season ago, so the team will be looking to his experience to help bolster the pitching staff.
John has been struggling with some injuries missing one start due to an arm issue. Thus far in his starts he has been a little shaky having a rough five run outing against the Yankees, but followed that up with a better outing in the team’s 4-0 loss to the Marlins.
It will be interesting to see how Manager Brandon Hyde will play means and what he will do with the rest of the rotation.
