Liberty Show Grit in 93-78 loss to Sparks

VIDEO: New York Liberty Head Coach Walt Hopkins along with stars Layshia Clarendon and Jazmine Jones share these thoughts after the team’s 93-78 loss to the Los Angeles Sparks on 8/11 in WNBA action.

The New York Liberty (1-7) showed grit and toughness but ultimately fell to the Los Angeles Sparks (5-3) by a final score of 93-78 in Tuesday night WNBA action. The team as a whole continues to struggle with turnovers and rebounds and those two things will lead to losses quickly, especially when you are going up against one of the best teams in the league like the Sparks.

Here are some notes from the game itself:

New York had 35 rebounds, 12 assists and 40 bench points.

The Liberty finished the contest tied for their second-highest scoring effort of the 2020 season with 78 points.

In the first half, New York shot 100% (11-11) from the free throw line. The team finished with 95.7% (22-23) from the charity stripe, 15.5% above the team’s previous average. Tonight’s effort from the free throw line is the Liberty’s single-game high this season.

Los Angeles set a franchise record in three-point percentage in a single game, shooting 64.7% (11-17) from beyond the arc (minimum 15 attempts).

Los Angeles opened the game on a 10-2 run before New York called its first timeout with 6:57 remaining in the opening quarter. The Sparks outscored the Liberty 28-14 in the first quarter.

Scoring was more equally balanced in the second quarter. LA outscored NY 23-20 before heading into the locker room.
