After an impressive run in the 2020 NWSL Challenge Cup, Sky Blue FC’s Kailen Sheridan has been awarded with the prestigious NWSL Golden Glove Award presented by Verizon and honoring the Challenge Cup’s top goalkeeper of the tournament. Her important contributions as a player and as a leader to the club have earned Sheridan this honor, as voted on by the media.

Sheridan helped lead Sky Blue FC to the semifinals of the Challenge Cup while playing every minute, 540 minutes, in six games and earning three clean sheets. Sheridan had a plethora of important saves in clutch moments, leading all keepers in the tournament with 21 saves and tied for the lead in the tournament with three shutouts prior to the NWSL Challenge Cup Final. Sheridan allowed only three goals in the four preliminary-round games for a .75 GAA. Possibly the most notable of Sheridan’s performances was the quarterfinal upset against Washington Spirit. In regular time, Sheridan kept a clean sheet, including a diving one handed save late in the first half to rob Washington of a possible go-ahead goal. In penalties, Sheridan made the game winning save to send Sky Blue FC to the semifinals as the number seven seeded team. Throughout the tournament, Sheridan earned five Verizon Save of the Match honors, two Secret Deodorant No Sweat Play of the Game honors, and Budweiser Woman of the Match recognition in the quarterfinal match against the Spirit.

“I’m very honored to receive the Golden Glove,” said Sheridan. “I’m more excited to share this award with my backline and my team because of the hard work and determination they’ve showed in preparation and during this tournament. Looking forward to getting back to work and pushing our standard.”

Sheridan came in third overall for the Tournament MVP, behind Chicago’s Julie Ertz and MVP winner Rachel Daly of the Houston Dash. Voting for the Tournament MVP was done by the media.

“I am so happy for Kailen and the team,” said Head Coach Freya Coombe. “She’s been a consistent top performer in the league and it’s great that she is getting the recognition she deserves. She exemplifies Sky Blue with her tireless work on and off the field to challenge herself and improve. It’s a credit to the whole team who have been tremendous in the Challenge Cup.”

The Canadian international’s performance in the Challenge Cup and winning of the Golden Glove further proves why Sheridan is widely regarded as one of the best goalkeepers in the world.
