VIDEO: New York Liberty General Manager Jonathan Kolb and the newest addition to the team Sabrina Ionescu share these thoughts from a Press Conference held by the team on 7/19
Just days before the season opener, New York Liberty General Manager Jonathan Kolb and new star-player Sabrina Ionescu vowed to give this season their best shot, but warned
fans not to expect a championship too early, as they are in the rebuilding phase.
“For us it’s a foundational year,” said Kolb during a live zoom call with the press. “It starts with our player development group and our young core. We are really focused on that right now. We are looking to go at it day by day.”
The efforts to rebuild seem to be heading in the right direction. With the addition of number one draft pick Sabrina Ionescu, break-out college player and a number of other pickups, the team is bound to show much improvement from last season with a record of 10-24 and winning percentage of .294.
New York are also expected to see a different style of play under newly minted Head Coach Walt Hopkins. Other new additions to the squad include Megan Walker, Jocelyn Willoughby, Jazmine Jones and Kylee Shook
Slated to return to the team and continue their fine play are Kia Nurse, Kiah Stokes, Asia Durr, and Amanda Zahui B. These ladies are going to be bringing an exciting brand of basketball to the floor.
In addition to getting used to a new style of play the Liberty as well as the rest of the WNBA has had to find ways to navigate and thrive in a recession, coronavirus pandemic and the increase of police brutality in America.
Asked about her stance on the latter in light of many prominent voice in the league stating there should not be a season but a time to work on social justice, Sabrina pointed out that play does not need to come to a stop to address the issue at hand.
“It’s a case by case basis,” said Ionescu. “I think many of us have large platforms and are using those platforms to speak up on such matters.”
The format will be different for the New York Liberty as well as the rest of the WNBA this season, as the league as a whole will be set to play their season down in Florida,. New York will play their first game of the season on Saturday, July 25th in Bradenton, Florida against Sue Bird and the Seattle Storm.
