There is still a ton of uncertainty going on in the world right now, but hope along with the world of sports is returning in a grand style. One of the next leagues to return is the National Women’s Soccer League as a wide range of the team’s made their debut in the 2020 NWSL Challenge Cup.
One of the featured matched that was played in Utah yesterday was that of the Washington Spirit taking on the Chicago Spirit, and the Spirit came out to impress earning a 2-1 victory in their debut in the tournament.
The Spirit opened up the scoring thanks to a beautiful goal by midfielder Rose Lavelle, who attacked a loose ball in the box finishing the play with a strong finish in the back of the net around the 8 minute mark.
Washington was able to maintain control of most of the match, as they were able to head into the locker room with a 1-0 lead at the Half. The Spirit was able to hold a 53% share of possession and did a stellar job on defense limiting the Chicago Red Stars to only one shot on goal.
Forward Ashley Hatch added the second goal of the match in the opening moments of the Second Half of the match, Hatch took advantage of a mistake that was made by the Red Stars Keeper, and cashed in on that opportunity from close range.
Chicago was able to tally their first goal of the match around the 51 mark of the Second Half when midfielder Morgan Gautra fielded a ball at the top of the Spirit’s penalty area and put the chance past a diving Aubrey Bledsoe.
The Red Stars had so many tremendous opportunities in an effort to tie up the game, that included a stellar play by midfielder Katlyn Johnson who found forward Bianca St. Georges in space near the Spirit’s six-yard-box, but a stunning one-handed save denied Chicago a significant scoring opportunity.
Washington locked down the defense though and kept the Chicago offense off the scoreboard to earn the thrilling 2-1 victory. Up next for the Spirit will be a great match, as they take on the reigning NWSL Champion North Carolina Courage on Wednesday at 10 pm ET at Zions Bank Stadium, with the game broadcast live on CBS All-Access.
These are exciting times for the world as things are starting to cautiously open up again along with the world of sports. It seem as if hope and sports has returned and it’ll be great to see some wonderful competition in the world of soccer thanks to the 2020 NWSL Challenge Cup
