Sky Blue FC Launches Community-Based Initiatives in Response to COVID-19 Pandemic

Sky Blue FC is launching three new community-based initiatives to unite supporters in light of the ongoing pandemic. These initiatives aim for our community to band together in support of those suffering from COVID-19, our brave health care workers on the frontlines, and everyone selflessly working to keep life moving forward.

The first initiative will work closely with Sky Blue FC Season Ticket Member and a ManorCare Health Services nurse, Kim Shinkle, who has left her home indefinitely to help battle the pandemic full-time. Sky Blue FC will design a digital note card for fans to write letters that will be forwarded to ManorCare residents battling COVID-19 and the caretakers risking their lives every day to battle the virus. As the pandemic continues to affect local communities, supporting and uplifting one another will become increasingly vital.

Other hospitals and organizations interested in receiving digital notes can email hurban@skybluesoccer.com or bbaker@skybluesoccer.com.

The second initiative will recognize local heroes working on the frontlines of COVID-19. Friends and family members are encouraged to nominate heroes in their communities with a description of why they are being nominated and a picture if applicable. Nominees will be recognized on Sky Blue FC’s digital platforms and will have the chance to be honored at a 2020 Sky Blue FC home game.

The third initiative will aim to support local small businesses impacted by statewide stay-at-home orders. On Friday, April 17, Sky Blue FC invites supporters to order dinner from a local restaurant or market and join a Sky Blue-hosted Zoom eat-in dinner & games night for #SBFCEatsLocal. The dinner meet-up will begin at 6:30 p.m. EST, with a friendly game of BINGO to begin at 7 p.m. ET. Joining the event will be Sky Blue FC front office staff, including General Manager Alyse LaHue, along with several Sky Blue players and members of the coaching staff, including Head Coach Freya Coombe. Those participating are encouraged to share a picture on social media and tag the restaurant they ordered from, along with the hashtag #SBFCEatsLocal.

To participate, register here prior to 5 p.m. EST on April 17.

In these unprecedented times, Sky Blue FC remains committed to the safety and wellbeing of our community. We recognize the tremendous efforts being put forth by those on the frontlines and other essential workers. We aim to continue our efforts to bring people together digitally and engage in safe, positive outreach wherever we can.

“Individually these will look like small efforts, but when we come together collectively, we can make a big impact,” said LaHue. “This is our little way to bring a sense of community during a time of extreme isolation, support those around us, and find a space to be hopeful.”
