Big Win for Big Red in Red Hot Hockey Classic

The Cornell University Men’s Hockey team (9-0) earned a huge victory over Boston University (4-6-5) in the Red Hot Hockey Classic held at Madison Square Garden. Playing in front of a sold out crowd both teams played an intense and physcial game, in the end it was the Big Red earning the big victory.

Having a stellar game in the cage for Cornell was goalkeeper Matthew Galajda who stopped 28 attempts. Scoring the first goal for the Big Red was Sophomore Michael Regush, who broke through at the 7:39 mark.  Later in in the frame Brenden Locke got a wicked wrister at the 7:59 mark for the 2-0 lead.

The Big Red took over with their physical play, showing some really solid defense throughout the course of the night and keeping the Boston offense enough away from the offensive zone to pick up the victory. Making some stellar saves for Boston University was Keeper Sam Tucker, who stopped 26 pucks. Junior David Farrance and Senior Patrick Harper had four hots on the net for the Terriers.

The Terriers were able to outshoot Big Red 10-5 in the opening 20 minutes, but in the end it was the tenacity of the Cornell offense that was able to break through and find the first goal.

Cornell and Boston University have been longtime rivals in the world of College Hockey, meeting with league and national championship implications on the line. Both have an amazing history of College Hockey as BU has won five national championships (1971, 1972, 1978, 1995 and 2009), while Cornell had claimed a pair of titles (1967 and 1970). These two prorgams have been able to combine to send more than 115 players to the National Hockey League.

When these two teams last met in the Red Hot Hockey event it was Cornell earning a 4-3 victory, as the Big Red was able to earn its first Red Hot Hockey victory in six tries. Beau Starrett scored in the first period, then goals by Trevor Yates and Alec McCrea in the second period gave Cornell a Commanding 3-0 lead. Boston University saw goals by Dante Fabbro and Tristian Mullen.
