No 16 Memphis Picks Up a Thriller over NC State 83-78 in Barclays Center Classic

In front of an amazing crowd at the Barclays Center both No 16 Memphis and NC State impressed in the Barclays Center Classic. Both teams battled but it in the end it was the Tigers picking up a 83-78 victory over the Wolfpack.

Helping to lead the way for the Memphis offense was Boogie Ellis who had 21 points in the game Precious Achiuwa added 15 points and 11 rebounds, and Tyler Harris had 14.  Achiuwa, who is a Queens-native made sure to make his mark in front of his friends and family at the Barclays Center.

Thus far Achiuwa has been impressive in his first year for the Tigers having recorded 105 points and grabbing 61 rebounds. Against NC State Precious had everything going for him including some sweet jumpers and some very nice low post moves. Also a highlight reel performance for Memphis came from Ellis.

As for the Wolfpack they were gritty and showed a ton of heart and some amazing defensive play, but in the end it was not enough for them to walk away with the victory. Leading the way on the offensive side for NC State was Markell Johnson who had 22 points, that was followed by Jericole Hellems who had 17 points.

NC State started off the game red hot as they were able to hit 7 of the first 9 shots to have a 15-9 lead over Memphis with 14:53 left in the First Half. The Tigers though found their offensive momentum thanks to Ellis and company. The Tigers took the lead in the First Half around the 12:55 mark when Tyler Harris hit a beautiful three-point shot. Achiuwa recorded his first two points of the game with a jumper around the 10:12 mark and didn’t look back, he is going to be one to watch as he progresses in his Collegiate career.

Memphis held a 55-39 lead at the Half. At the time Boogie Ellis had a 6-8 performance from the floor leading the team with 17 points. For NC State they saw some impressive shooting performances especially from DJ Funderburk who had seven points. At the end of the game Funderbunk finished with 14 and will be a fun player to watch as the NC State season progresses. The thing that really hurt the Wolfpack on this day was the rebounding, as they were outrebounded by 13, which was the biggest rebounding deficit NC State has thus far this season.

Both teams really impressed not only with their fast paced style of play, but also with their overall shooting and defensive performance sending a very nice crowd of both Memphis and NC State fans that were at the Barclays Center home happy.

Now both teams will head back south to continue their nonconference schedule and see how they play in their respective conferences. Memphis will return to the FedEdForum to take on Bradley on Tuesday night, as for NC State they will return to action on Wednesday evening at PNC Arena when they host Wisconsin.
