No 18 Auburn Wins Roman Legends Classic Championship over Richmond

The Auburn University Men’s Basketball team continues to make history and waves in the College Men’s Basketball scene with an impressive 79-65 victory over Richmond in the Roman Legends Classic held at the Barclays Center on 11/26. The Tigers who come off a Final Four apperance last year was able to win the program’s first regular-season tournament since 2004, while also giving a very game Richhmond team their first loss of the year.

Leading the way for the Tigers was Samir Doughty who had a game-high 22 points while Austin Wiley followed with 18 points.  This amazing duo was able to impress throughout most of the Classic and helped to ignite the Tigers offense in the Second Half of play against the Spiders, as Wiley made back-to-back buckets on the inside of the paint. Doughty followed-up with a dazzling three point shot, which was the start of a 19-6 run for the Tigers.

Wiley who is going to be a hard player to stop inside the paint for the Tigers was able to grab eight rebounds and was named Most Valuable Player of the Tournament after recording a double-double against New Mexico. Fans of Men’s Basketball should keep an eye out for both Doughty and Wiley as they progress in their careers, as both young men have the potential to continue an amazing career once they have completed their degree at Auburn.

Also having a great offensive game for the Tigers was Isaac Okoro, who had nine points in the Second Half and J’Von McCormick finished the game with seven points. For the Spiders they were led by Grant Golden who had 14 points, Jacob Gilyard and Nick Sherod both tallied 12 points to lead what is going to be an impressive offense to watch for Richmond.

Earlier in the day New Mexico was able earn a nailbiting 59-50 victory over Wisconsin, which was the Lobos’ first win over a Power 5 team since 2012.  Leading the way for the offense was Ja’Quan Lyle who had 14 points. Carlton Bragg, JJ Caldwell and Zane Martin all recorded 12 points each.

For Wisconsin they had two players finishing in double-digit scoring as Nate Reuvers led all scorers with 16 points and D’Mitrik Trice finished with 11 points.
