New York City FC 1, Toronto FC 2 | 2019 MLS Cup Playoffs Match Recap
NYCFC season comes to an end after being defeated by Toronto FC 2-1 in the Audi 2019 MLS Cup Playoffs Eastern Conference Semifinals at Citi Field.
Toronto FC turned many heads with their strong play coming into a hostile environment, and stealing a win on the road. NYCFC impressive record of 18-10-6 comes to no avail as they are sent home early after a game that looked very winnable to many.
TFC impressive play came without their starter Jozy Altidore. Atlitdore amassed 11 goals in 22 games making him one of the focal points of the offense. Altidore’s absence left the goal scoring duties to attacking midfielder Alejandro Pozuelo.
Going into the game, NYCFC had the advantage of coming in fresh. The team had a first round bye, leaving them time to prepare and get their bodies ready for a heated matchup at Citi Field. On the other hand, TFC did not have much time to prepare as they took on D.C. United Saturday Night at BMO field.
TFC had complete control over the first half forcing goalie Sean Johnson into a number of great saves. Although they had many great chances they were not able to capitalize on any of their opportunities leaving the score at 0-0 going into the second half.
Toronto’s first half dominance finally showed up on the scoreboard as midfielder Alejandro Pozuelo was gifted a goal off a very poor header by defender Maxime Chanot.
There was a resurgence in energy from NYCFC, as midfielder Maxi Moralez put in a flawless ball that would land on the feet of Ismael Tajouri-Shradi leveling the game at 1-1. Everything seemed like it was going well for NYCFC until the closing minutes of the game when defender Ronald Matarrita committed a clumsy tackle bringing down Richie Laryea in the 88th minute. With the game on the line, and a trip to the MLS Audi Cup Eastern Conference Finals, Pozuelo stepped up to the spot and buried the penalty advancing his team to the next round.
Toronto now look forward to Wednesdays Eastern Conference Final against the Winner of Atalanta FC and Philadelphia Union October 30th on FS1, FOX Deportes, TSN and TVAS.
