Yu Baiwei, Captain of China’s National Team, Joins the Minnesota Whitecaps

Yu Baiwei, the longtime captain of China’s women’s national team, has joined the defending Isobel Cup champion Minnesota Whitecaps of the NWHL.

Yu, 31, is the highest-scoring defender in the history of the Chinese national team. She competed in the 2010 Olympics in Vancouver and was one of just three defenders on China to earn a point in that tournament. She’s also a veteran of a dozen IIHF Women’s World Championship tournaments and was named the Top Player on Team China in the 2017 and 2019 Division 1 Group B World Championships.

“Yu is a hard-working, tenacious defender who loves to compete,” said Minnesota co-head coach Ronda Engelhardt. “She is eager to continue to improve in the NWHL and we know she will come to each Whitecaps’ practice and game ready to go.”

Yu played in the CWHL the last two seasons with Kunlun Red Star and the Shenzhen KRS Vanke Rays. In 2018, Kunlun Red Star advanced to the 2018 Clarkson Cup Final. She scored a goal in both of her CWHL seasons, finishing her career with seven points in 56 games.

Her game-winning goal against Toronto in a game in Shenzhen in November, 2017 was the first goal scored by a Chinese national in CWHL history.
