Sky Blue FC Fall 3-0 to Chicago Red Stars

Sky Blue FC (4-13-4, 16 points) fell 3-0 to the Chicago Red Stars at Yurcak Field in a Sunday evening matchup. Chicago’s Morgan Brian, Sam Kerr, and Yuki Nagasato each had a goal.

The match started out slow with possession going back and forth between the sides. Sky Blue’s first chance on goal came in the 29th minute from the feet of Carli LloydPaige Monaghan received the ball from a throw-in and quickly sent it up to Lloyd who hustled past Chicago defender Tierna Davidson. Lloyd went one-on-one with goalkeeper Alyssa Naeher and was denied from point-blank range.

Chicago scored their first goal of the night in the 31st minute. Midfielder Morgan Brian collected a pass and sent it forward to Sam Kerr on the left side of the 18-yard box. Kerr crossed it back through the center of the box to an unmarked Brian, and she sent it to the back of the net.

Kerr scored in the 33rd minute to put Chicago up 2-0. Forward Yuki Nagasato threaded a ball to Kerr, who sent her shot low just under Kailen Sheridan attempted kick save.

Lloyd had another chance to put Sky Blue on the board in the 62nd minute. This time Raquel Rodriguez threaded a ball to Lloyd on the right side of the 18-yard box and ripped a shot at Naeher who was able to make the save.

The final goal of the night came from Chicago in the 80th minute. Midfielder Zoey Goralski slipped a pass to Nagasato at the top of the 18-yard box, and sent the shot to the upper right-hand corner to make it 3-0.

Quotes:

Interim Head Coach – Freya Coome

General thoughts on the game:
“Yeah, the result wasn’t what we wanted. I think the first half performance echoed the one we had last week. I think we had a strong start, controlling the game at the start. But then it just got away from us with a couple of lapses in concentration for the goals. So that was disappointing. And then I think we came back into the game, and then in the second half, and we put them under pressure, but just failed to take our chances and really make it count. We got sucker-punched at the other end. So I was disappointed with the result. But there are some strengths to take from the performance in terms of our ability to create chances now, which is good.”

On first half and Chicago sitting back:
“I think they set in against us, I think they were kind of respecting the pace that we’ve got, and the strikers that we’ve got. And I think, you know, we were a bit cautious with them. It’s a bit of cat and mouse in terms of we’re both kind of dropping off a little bit and letting them possess in the back. They let us possess in the back. And then it was a case of how could we undo each other. So It’s a bit of a sort of similar tactical experience for both teams, but they managed to break us down and make sure we can’t break them down.”

On being optimistic about today’s performance, despite the result:
“I think we did do some of the simple things well today. So as a coach, that’s always a sense of optimism, because if you know that the players can do that. So if we can turn that performance around, you know, we’ve outshot our opponent, which we weren’t doing at the start of the season. So it’s creating chances. It’s now just working to find those individual mistakes, I think, and then just being a bit more clinical. So, you know, for something like that if we looked completely out of our debts, and it’s something that we can’t fix, but you know, for me, I’m optimistic because I think it’s so fixable. It’s just being a bit, you know, a bit more clinical on the ball and taking our chances. I think we would have seen a different score line then.”

Sky Blue FC Midfielder & Captain – Sarah Killion

General thoughts on the game:
“It’s a tough one, I mean not you know, good enough and we know that. I think we’re making mistakes against a team like that and giving up two goals that quickly, really deflates you and we just got to play better, can’t make mistakes. And you know that easily and collectively as a team, we’ve got to bounce back a little bit better.”

On Chicago sitting back:
This team in this league, they keep a really good block, and they’re hard to break down, and they’re strong team offensively and defensively. So it’s one of those things where whatever they give us during the game, we got to figure out how to break it down. And that’s our job. And we need to do that a little bit quicker and be a little bit more creative about it.”

On the Sky Blue FC today compared to April:
“I think we’re in a much better position than we were in April. But I think that we’ve shown hints of greatness, but not consistent enough, and not for 90 minutes. So I think it’s going to be about kind of putting a full 90-minute game for us. And we have done it here and there this year. But again, it’s just it’s not enough to only do it in a couple of games. It’s 24 games throughout the season, and you’ve got to bring it in all 24”
