Cyclones Take Two from the ‘Cats to Keep Wild Card Hopes Alive

It was a big night for the Brooklyn Cyclones (34-27) as they were able to earn two victories over the Tri-City ValleyCats (25-36) in New York-Penn League action at MCU Park.  It has been a tight race for the Wild Card spot as the Cyclones have jumped from first to last so many times that fans of the franchise are starting to feel like a yo-yo. Overall though the fan base is very impressed with the development of the players within the team though, and having another packed house at MCU Park just goes to show what the combination of great development and winning baseball means to Brooklyn.

Currently the Cyclones are in First Place in the Wild Card, but that can change at any given moment and at any given time. The team started the game on 8/18 by playing the game that was suspended on 8/17 with the combination of Fog and Rainy Weather. The Cyclones picked up the 2-1 victory thanks to a Wild Sixth Inning. In the end Brooklyn was able to come out on top thanks to back-to-back walks by Jose Peroza and Raul Beracierta. Brooklyn’s Bullpen came up huge once again as Jared Biddy and Matt Mullenbach combined to keep Tri-City off the board and help the Cyclones win the First Game of the day.

Brooklyn was able to score the first run in the Second Game thanks to an RBI double by Gavin Garay. Some errant baseball by the ‘Cats helped Brooklyn score their second run later in the frame. Things got interesting in the Sixth Inning, as the two teams were tied at 3-3.  The game technically went to Extra Innings thanks to the fact that these two squads had to play the suspended game earlier in the day. So with a runner on Second Base in the Bottom of the Eighth Inning Yoel Romero provided the heroics for the Cyclones, crushing a homer to left field for the 5-3 victory.

Thanks to the two victories Cyclones Manager Edgardo Alfonzo now has 98 victories with the squad. It was a great night for Alfonzo to be able to pick up these victories as the franchise celebrating Italian Heritage night, was able to bring in one of his influences when it comes time to managing in Bobby Valentine. Also on hand to witness the Cyclones victory was Mets great John Franco. Alfonzo spoke at great length about what Valentine and that Mets squad meant to him and fans can check out those thoughts by clicking on the two videos seen later in the article.

Brooklyn will look to continue their winning ways at MCU Park, as they look to complete the sweep of the ‘Cats on 8/19 with the game scheduled for 7:00 p.m. Looking to take the hill for the Cyclones will be RHP Nate Jones (0-1, 3.00) as he takes on  RHP Ryan Gusto (First NYPL start).
