The Brooklyn Cyclones (31-23) looked to continue their winning ways against the Staten Island Yankees (29-26) in a New York-Penn League Contest on Monday, August 12, 2019. On the mound for the Cyclones is pitcher Mike GIbbons, who is making a minor league rehab assignment start with the team. Gibbons will start against Alfredo Garcia, who has been pitching well for the Staten Island Yankees.
In the last game against the Yankees the Cyclones rallied from a early 4-0 deficit and earned an 11-4 victory over their rivals. First Baseman Joe Genord went 2-for-5 in the game with a home run and six RBIs to pace the offense. Jose Peroza had a 3-for-4 day at the plate with four RBI’s. Other Cyclones players to watch for are Jake Mangum, who has hit safely in 13 of his last 14 games and is batting .333 (16-for-18) over the span. Since July 27th, he has stolen six bases and has a .418 on-base percentage. Wilmer Reyes is batting .356 (48-135) with 19 runs scored and 21 RBIs in the 35 games over the span.
In the game on 8/12 at MCU Park the Cyclones scored first and never looked back to now have a First Place spot in the New York-Penn League Wild Card Standings. Gibbons had three no-hit innings in his rehab assignment with the team, the starter was replaced by Garrison Bryant who was able to earn his fourth victory with the club.
Reyes continues his fine hitting for Brooklyn as the Infielder laced a single in the Bottom of the First Inning to get the offense going. Mangum continues his fine hitting as the outfielder has now hit safely in 14 of his last 15 games via his triple in the Fifth Inning. The top of the order was so key for the Cyclones as Mangum and Antoine Duplantis both tallied two hits in the game. Brooklyn added insurance in the bottom of the eighth when Jose Peroza slammed a two-run home run off the videoboard in left field to extend a 2-1 lead to 4-1.
The Cyclones will look to Sweep the Staten Island Yankees in the finale of the three game series out in Staten Island tonight, before heading up to Vermont for a three game set. The Team will return back to Brooklyn on August 17 as they will take on the Tri-City ValleyCats for three games.

No Sleep Till Brooklyn: Brooklyn is first in the New York-Penn League with a .281 (128-455) batting average with runners in scoring position. The Cyclones are batting .270 with RISP and two outs, which is seond best in the league.
Cardiac Attack: Brooklyn is 14-11 in one-run games this season through 55 games, 25 of those have been decided by a single run. Six of Brooklyn’s last Nine Games have been decided by a single run. The Cyclones have won 19 games by one run in 2003, the most one-run victories in one season in franchise history.
In the Battle of the Bridge Brooklyn holds a 119-116 all-time against the Staten Island Yankees. This is the 236th meeting in ‘The Battle of the Bridge,’ the most games the Cyclones have played against any team in franchise history. The Cyclones swept two from Staten Island to open 2019, but Staten Island swept a three-game set the next weekend. Brooklyn hasn’t won the season series with the Baby Bomers since 2014.
Pitching is Key: The Cyclones Pitchers currently lead the New York-Penn League, having allowed just 334 hits in 465.2 innings this season. They have allowed 25 fewer base knocks than any other team in the league.
Alfonzo’s Quest for 100: Cyclones manager Edgardo Alfonzo has 95 wins as the manager of the team and is hoping to become the fourth manager in franchise history to eclipse the 100-win plateau. If he does so he will join his brother Edgar Alfonzo, Rich Donnelly and Tom Gamboa.
