Hofstra won its third straight game and for the 19th time in its last 20 games with a 99-95 victory over Charleston on Thursday evening in South Carolina. The Pride got strong games from senior Justin Wright-Foreman and junior Eli Pemberton as Wright-Foreman posted 30 points in the game and Pemberton added 25 points, seven rebounds and five assists. It marked the first time two Pride players had at least 25 points in the same game since Wright-Foreman (30) and Pemberton (28) did the feat in a win at Rider on December 9, 2017. Graduate student Jacquil Taylor continued to be a huge part of the Pride’s success this season with 12 points and eight rebounds in the win, while junior Tareq Coburn had four three-pointers (all in the first half) en route to 14 points. Senior Desure Buie had nine points, 10 assists, three rebounds and three steals, while committing just one turnover in 38 minutes of action.
Wright-Foreman is now averaging a team-high 26.2 points, while Pemberton is second with 15.4 points per outing. Taylor leads the team in rebounding with 8.1 per game and also has a team-best 40 blocked shots. Buie is tops on the squad in assists with 5.2 per game and steals with 2.5 per contest.
UNCW dropped a tough 81-77 decision at home to Northeastern on Thursday. Kai Toews had a double-double with 17 points and 10 assists for the Seahawks, while Jeantal Cylla led UNCW with 19 points. Devontae Cacok leads UNCW in a multitude of categories as he is tops on the team in scoring (15.1), rebounding (11.9), steals (27) and blocked shots (15). Toews leads the team with 7.8 assists per outing.
Hofstra is 20-21 all-time against UNCW, with all 41 meetings occurring since the Pride joined the CAA in 2001-02. Hofstra won this season’s earlier meeting in Hempstead by the score of 87-72 as Pemberton led the Pride with 24 points and Wright-Foreman added 19. The Pride has lost two straight in Wilmington, last earning a thrilling 70-69 victory in the Port City during the 2015-16 campaign.
