Marvin Clark II Named to BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll

After averaging a team-best 17.5 points per game in a 2-0 week for the unbeaten Red Storm, Marvin Clark II has been named to the BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll for the first time in his St. John’s career.

The redshirt senior forward from Kansas City, Mo., tallied his team-leading 17.5 points per game on 55.6 percent shooting from the floor, including a 53.3 percent showing from three-point range. Clark also sank all seven of his free throw attempts in wins over St. Francis Brooklyn and Sacred Heart.

In addition to lighting up the scoreboard, Clark also stuffed the stat sheet in other ways, leading the team with 6.5 boards per game to go along with 2.5 assists, 2.0 blocks and 1.0 steals per game.

In the Red Storm’s first win of the week, a 34-point drubbing of St. Francis Brooklyn on Wednesday, Clark posted 12 points, seven rebounds, four assists and a career-high four blocks in 27 minutes of action. Clark made three of his five shots from the field, including two of his four tries from beyond the arc.

On Saturday night against Sacred Heart in the Johnnies’ final outing before the start of BIG EAST play, Clark played like a man possessed in the first half. The 6-foot-7 forward scored all 23 of his points in the opening stanza, finishing just one shy of his career high set last year at DePaul. In 17 minutes, Clark made seven of his nine field goal attempts overall, including a 6-of-8 effort from three. His six triples set a new career high and tied for the sixth highest single-game total in program history. On the game, Clark also grabbed six boards and came away with a pair of steals.

One of just five unbeaten teams left standing in college basketball, the Red Storm (12-0) is off to its best start in 36 years. The 1982-83 Johnnies, led by sophomore and eventual BIG EAST Player of the Year Chris Mullin, rattled off 14-straight wins to kick off the campaign en route to the program’s first ever conference title.

Clark and the Johnnies will begin the BIG EAST portion of their schedule on Saturday, heading across the river to Newark for an 8:30 p.m. showdown with Seton Hall. Saturday’s contest will mark the 100th meeting all-time between the original BIG EAST rivals.
