New York Jets Transcript – Head Coach Todd Bowles, 9.28

On if Marcus Maye will be a game-time decision…

Yeah, we are going to work on it right before to see how he’s feeling.

On Buster Skrine and Doug Middleton playing Sunday…

Same thing.

On what happened to ArDarius Stewart…

His foot got caught in the ground, hurt his leg.

On if Stewart’s injury is season-ending…

No.

On how serious Stewart’s injury is…

He’s going to be out for a little while.

On if Stewart will have to have surgery…

No.

On having extra time to prepare coming off of a Thursday game…

You like the back end. It’s kind of like a mini bye. The guys get some time off and they get to sleep in and they get to heal a little bit. Three games in 11 days takes it’s toll. You hate the front end, you like the back end.

On the mindset of the team coming off of two losses…

The mindset feels pretty good. We are ready to go. We will go down there and try to win a ball game.

On what things he could do to keep a young team on an even keel through losses..

Everything is a teachable moment, whether you win or you lose. Like I said, we just have to keep our head down and grind. If we win this ball game we’ve got to keep our head down, if we lose this ball game we’ve got to keep our head down. We understand the mistakes we were making. We are trying to correct those in practice and go out and play, go out and play fast and go out and play hard.

On how he prepares the team for the hot weather in Jacksonville…

You don’t, you’re just practicing and making sure we are hydrated and ready to go.

On his approach to hydrating his players…

A little bit of everything. We have nutritionists and these guys are drinking a lot and their hydration levels are up and everything is good. We monitor it during the week and we make sure we go into the game, per person, hydrated.

On what having Maye back would bring to the defense….

If he plays, anytime you get a starter back it helps you.

On how he feels about Josh Martin’s ability to start and play for an extended time…

We will monitor it and see if he fits in the actives on Sunday. Like I said, he hadn’t done anything. But he worked out pretty good this week, so we will monitor which guys we need to put down and which guys we don’t have to put down.

On if Martin could be inactive…

It’s possible.

On if he has been pleasantly surprised with the pass rush this season…

It’s something we try to do and it’s something we have to keep working at. You don’t get pleased or displeased, you just keep your head down and keep working. We can do a lot of things better in the pass rush, and we can get more pressure.

On how Sam Darnold can avoid getting rattled against a tough defense in Jacksonville…

He’s just got to play his game. You don’t worry about what people say, you just play your game. He’ll play his game and he’ll be fine.

On how a quarterback avoids getting rattled if they get hit or there is pressure…

Well it’s not the quarterback, it’s the other 10 guys doing their jobs. If they protect him and everyone is doing their job, then he doesn’t get rattled. So, it’s up to everybody over there. It’s not just up to the quarterback.

On how he thinks the offensive line has played through three games…

They have done some good things. There’s some plays that we would like to have back, but overall they’re making progress and they’ve been steady.

On how much of a challenge Jacksonville’s defensive front is for the offensive line…

It’s huge. It’s a challenge every week. Every team is going to have good players up there, so it’s a challenge every week. There are different types of challenges, so this is just the latest of the ones that are coming.

On if Terrelle Pryor is okay…

He was full today.

On if Terrelle Pryor will be able to play against Jacksonville…

He was full.

On how he would evaluate the job that Isaiah Crowell and Bilal Powell have done so far…

It’s early, I’m not really in evaluation mode. They are tough, and they play hard. We are just trying to win ball games.

On if he expects to see more out of Nathan Shepherd…

As the season goes and he sees blocks and recognizes them, yes I expect to see him.

On the report that there is an internal debate on how to coach Darnold…

I think that’s something that you’ll probably have to ask (the reporter), because I haven’t heard of it.

On the report that some people in the building want to simplify the offense for Darnold…

Again, you can get (the reporter) up here and you can ask (the reporter) any questions you want. I have no clue.

On if there is an internal debate on how to coach Darnold…

I haven’t talked to (the reporter), so no I don’t know of any.
