New York Jets Transcript – Head Coach Todd Bowles, 9.11

On what stood out that wasn’t apparent from Sam Darnold’s performance last night…

Nothing for the most part. I thought he played well after the first play. He did some good things. We had some problems with the headsets, so we had to call timeout a few times but that was no fault of his. (We) had some headset issues where they (weren’t) working so he (couldn’t) hear the play. I thought he handled himself well.

On his thoughts of the first offensive play of the game…

I was fine with it. We were going up there to win the ball game. We had some aggressive plays called and that one unfortunately didn’t work. It was the first play of the game but nobody got down on it and we went on from there.

On what he thinks Darron Lee meant about knowing their ‘signal’ comments..

No, we didn’t know any audibles, we didn’t know any plays. Those guys did a good job following out their assignments that the coaches taught them. And they were anticipating certain things, if they had certain formations and (we) were in good position to make those type of plays but I don’t think we knew the plays.

On if it was good game planning, scouting and preparation…

The coaches did a good job of just preparing them and that was really about it. We didn’t know their plays, per say.

On how much time the players prepared for the game against the Lions…

It was a long week, so it was really just that week because we had a couple of extra days to prepare as well so that kind of helped out a lot.

On how the team came out of the game injury wise…

We came out pretty good.

On if there were any significant injuries…

No.

On if thinks the Parry Nickerson play in the end zone was an interception…

Well we were out of timeouts so we didn’t have any reviews, but they did review it and they told me that’s why they decided on it and they came to the sideline and told me they reviewed it and it wasn’t a catch. So we just went on with it.

On what has impressed him the most about Sam Darnol’d poise…

He’s the same guy every day. I think that is important at the quarterback position for you to be the same guy every day, whether it’s good or bad, everybody needs to see that from a team’s standpoint as well as a coaching standpoint, you know what you’re getting out of that guy. You trust that type of person when you’re the same guy every day and that’s really been the most impressive thing.

On how rare Sam Darnold’s poise is…

It’s great to see it. It’s rare more now a days, it was a little more common back then for whatever reason, but it’s a little more rare than I’ve been around. It’s exciting to see because he got an old soul but he’s young in age, but he understands the game very well and he works at it the right way.

On if Darnold’s poise makes it easier not to worry in that area…

I don’t think it’s easier as a bit more comforting knowing that he’s going to go study and do those types of things, but I don’t think it makes it any easier.

On if he has an exemption on Kevin Pierre-Louis when he’ll have a roster decision on him…

No, we’re make it in the next two days or so, (the) next day rather.

On if the decision will be within the next day…

Yeah.

On how he thought Frankie Luvu played last night…

I thought he was good for his first game haven’t played in the NFL before and just coming back off the practice squad I thought he tone down a lot of the mistakes he made in the preseason. I was happy with the way he played.

On if he thinks that the running backs performance helped Sam…

It always helps to have a running game as a quarterback regardless of who you are, with the offensive line blocking and the runners doing what they did I thought it took a lot of weight off of him.

On if he was happy with the offensive line…

I was pleased with them. We ran the ball 36 times, that what you want as an offensive lineman, those guys got better and better as the game went on, so I was very happy with them.

On if there is anything he saw with Darron Lee over the summer that he wasn’t able to do in previous years…

The game slowed down for him, I don’t think he’s doing anything that he hasn’t done. He’s got more knowledge of the game and the film study is easier, He’s working his tale off to be the best player he can be and we’re happy with it.

On if anything has changed for the team with the expectations being high…

Our expectations was like that before the game, it doesn’t change (anything)  we had high expectation for ourselves to began with. That game changes nothing for us, cause it was one game, we have 15 more to go. We’re going to try and win those different ways. Obviously, every week won’t be the same, but our expectations have not changed.

On if Jermaine Kearse was close to playing to last night…

Yeah, he was close.

On if it was a game-time decision not to play Kearse…

I had been made it, but he was making the case to play, but I decided not to play him.

On Marcus Maye being inactive too…

He’s working. We will see how this week goes.

On if Kearse is to being available against the Dolphins…

Too early to tell.

On Doug Middleton’s performance…

He did okay. I thought he did a good job stepping in there. He played with a lot of confidence, communication was good and he made the plays when he had an opportunity.
