New York Jets Transcript – Head Coach Todd Bowles, 9.7

On if he feels better about Jermaine Kearse after practicing today…

He was limited, but we will see. We’ve still got time.

On if Doug Middleton will replace Marcus Maye if Maye is out Monday…

(It’s) between Doug and J.J. (Wilcox). We will work with both and make a decision if he couldn’t go.

On if Terrence Brooks is more of a strong safety…

Well it’s different packages for Terrence. We all use them all differently.

On what his options are if Josh Martin doesn’t play…

We’ll work on all of them and we’ll make the decision on Monday.

On what is reasonable to ask of Jeremiah Attaochu in the game with only a week of practice…

He’s been in a 3-4 his whole career, so he understands it. Some of the terminology is different, but he’s a bright guy. We’ll try to teach him certain things and let him grasp what he can grasp.

On his confidence level with Sam Darnold handling the Week One pressure…

I’m starting him, my confidence level has got to be pretty high. He’s (been) playing football his whole life. We don’t go by age. There’s always going to be one-year guys, two-year guys and 10-year guys. It’s a team going up there, so I don’t worry about the confidence of the quarterback. I worry about the confidence of the team. I just go by that and I go from there.

On if he has to be conservative in the beginning with a young quarterback…

We’re going to be trying to win a game not play a game.

On if the lack of film on the Lions defense poses a challenge to Darnold…

It’s going to be like that every week, and like everybody else not just the quarterback, but every position there’s going to be unknown. People can change and do certain things, but we have keys to read and we have coaches and we coach them up the best we can. We’re confident that they’ll go out and play.

On his expectations for Nathan Shepherd’s first start…

The same thing he’s been doing since we got him here. Continue to get better, understand the blocking scheme and play his ball game.

On when they realized Shepherd could be a key part of the defense…

We watched college film obviously. During the spring we do our due diligence and do homework and we liked what we saw on film and as we brought him in, he continues to get better and better and he’s exactly what we saw on film. We kind of like where he’s at.

On if Shepherd has an even keel personality like Darnold…

Shep is completely different. A D-Lineman and quarterback mindsets are completely different. He’s been a joy to coach and to be around. He works hard. He doesn’t take a play off or and doesn’t take a day off and we like that about him.

On what Middleton showed him after going back to school when he was hurt last year…

We knew what kind of guy he was before he got hurt. That’s outstanding, anytime you can go back and get your degree of any kind that’s first and foremost more important. We like everything he’s been doing this summer and the way he came back from his injury, so we like where he’s at as well.

On what the strength of Middleton’s game is…

He’s really yet to play all the way, but he can do a lot of things well. He does whatever we ask him to do, so I don’t really thing he has a strength or weakness. He can work on a few things, but he’s very good at a lot of things as well.

On what is the team’s confidence level…

I’m fine with that. We’re good.

On if the team feels that this is a different season for them…

Yes, they know it’s a different season.

On if it’s tough emotionally to have to wait until Monday night to start their season…

I could use the extra sleep (joking).

On how much noise he has used in his preparation…

As much as we can. Anytime we play on the road, we try to use noise. The way to quiet that down is to play well. Obviously if they are playing well and we are not, it gets louder and louder. If we are playing well and they’re not it gets quieter and quieter.

On what reasonable expectations are for Darnold in his first game…

Play well and win the game.
