New York Liberty guard and Suffolk, Virginia native Sugar Rodgers will be hosting a free back-to-school basketball camp for local kids ages 8-15 on Saturday, September 8 at her high school alma mater, King’s Fork.

“I’m one of the first people in my hometown to do a free camp,” explained Rodgers. “The fact that it is in my hometown makes it special.”

The camp will be separated into a pair of sessions-the early morning clinic, from 8:00 AM to 12:00 PM, serves youth ages eight to 11 years old. The afternoon will end with a session for youth ages 12-15 years old from 1:00 PM to 5:00 PM.

Rodgers continued. “It feels great to just be able to give back to my community. I never thought I would be in this position to have the opportunity to share blessings like these.”

The sessions will be taught by various high school and college coaches, along with current and former basketball players. The clinic will feature fun-filled games all while instilling fundamental instruction and skill-building to improve basketball ability.

Rodgers ended. “I just want our youth to be thankful and appreciative of the support people offer them and want to be there for them in everyday life.”

Rodgers wrapped up her sixth season in the WNBA, fifth with the New York Liberty averaging 6.3 ppg, 3.2 rpg and 2.0 apg. The 2017 WNBA Sixth Woman of the Year recipient was a four-year starter at Georgetown where she guided the Hoyas to three trips to the NCAA Tournament, including the Sweet 16. She finished her career as the school’s all-time leader in scoring (2,518) and three-pointers made (346).

In her hometown, Rodgers was also a McDonald’s All-American, three-time Tidewater Conference Player of the Year, earned team MVP honors all four seasons at King’s Fork High School, a Virginia First Team All-State honoree and won Southeastern District Regular Season and Tournament MVP awards her senior year.
