Allen Selected to Australia Team for FIBA Women’s World Cup

New York Liberty stretch forward, Rebecca Allen, is among several WNBA players named in Australia’s team for the FIBA Women’s Basketball World Cup to be staged in Tenerife, Spain, next month.

Allen, who most recently played club for the Union Lyon féminin, upped her points’ average with the Liberty from a season ago, 3.8 ppg on 40.0-percent shooting. The 6’2 forward also strung together three double-digit scoring performances, grabbed a season-best four boards on three separate occasions and shot 36.2-percent from distance and 78.3-percent at the charity stripe this year.

“I’m excited for this year,” said Allen. “I’m glad that I have this opportunity.”

Phoenix Mercury head coach, Sandy Brondello, will pilot the team-a squad that has not slotted lower than fifth in the final standings in qualifying years since 1994.

“Bec is a scorer but her length can create issues on defense as well,” said Brondello.

Allen was a member of the 2014 World Cup team that finished third in the final standings knocking off Kia Nurse and Canada, 63-52, in the quarterfinal before falling to Tina Charles and the United States by a 12-point decision, 82-70, in the semis. She last represented the Opals at the FIBA Oceania Championship in 2015.

Allen will also be accompanied by Dallas Wings teammates Liz Cambage and Cayla George, and Phoenix Mercury duo Leilani Mitchell and Stephanie Talbot.

At the Mercury’s helm, Brondello guided her group to 11 wins in the month of June, a franchise record, and earned her first WNBA Coach of the Month award. She also eclipsed the 100-win mark, the seventh-fastest head coach to do so.

Australia is in Group B with Nigeria, Argentina and Turkey and will open their tournament with a game against Nigeria on September 22 in Tenerife, Spain.

“Our focus will be making sure we are ready to play at our best each and every game,” said Brondello.
