New York Jets Transcript – Head Coach Todd Bowles, 8.8

On if he has decided how he will use the quarterbacks on Friday…
In my head I have, but again I haven’t met with the coaches yet. We are going to meet in the next two days and discuss it and we will go from there.

On if all three quarterbacks will play…
Everybody on that field dressed better be ready to play.

On what he looks for in the first preseason game…
We’ve got a lot of guys, so obviously substitution is going to be a big thing. I am really looking for substitution to be clean, and I’m looking for some guys on special teams that can run and cover kicks and that can block. Hopefully we’re crisp on offense and defense and kind of go from there.

On if he is anxious to see some of the rookies other than Sam Darnold play…
I’m anxious to see all of them. I got my eye on a lot of people, some free agents as well and some guys we got from different teams. It’s going to be interesting Friday night seeing everybody in action.

On if there is additional focus on certain positions where he has a difficult decision to make…
Yeah there are, and that’s why these games are important because they’re so close. Obviously, we want to see them against different people and different schemes, and going into Friday night will be the start of evaluating these guys fully that are very close and it’s going to be nip tuck. The better your team gets, the harder the decision gets to cutting anybody. So, it’s going to be key these next couple games.

On Lorenzo Mauldin limping off at practice…
I didn’t see him limp off. I’m sure his leg was tight when he came out. I don’t know if that’s it, but I’ll go check and see what is wrong with him.

On what went into his decisions to have the joint practices this year and what he anticipates…
Well, it worked out. We have been trying to have them over the years, but the scheduling worked out and it’s great to see some of the younger guys get more reps. Whoever doesn’t play that much in the games get to play in practice and it’s good to go against a different scheme. You get tired of going up against the same offensive and defensive schemes, and they’re a very good football team and they have a lot of things they do well. It will be a good test for some of the guys that won’t play in the game a lot next Thursday.

On Darnold’s struggles under-throwing the ball and what can be done to fix it…
I don’t think he struggles, I think that’s part of it. I think everybody on the field is just working to get better. It’s not Sam struggling, there’s days when defense misses some things and individual positions, it’s just part of being in camp. It’s part of being a quarterback and part of the position. I am very happy where he is right now and we’ll go from there.

On what goes into an under-throw other than just not throwing the ball far enough…
There’s a bunch of things. It could be the route run wrong, it could be his feet aren’t set, it could be over extending the arm, it could be a hand in his face. There’s a lot of factors that go into those things. When you sit down and look at film you get to see all that.

On how much has been thrown at Darnold in terms of the defensive looks…
He’s getting a lot. He’s getting a good dose. He’s getting a dose just like Josh (McCown) and Teddy (Bridgewater). He got a good feel in the pocket, but he is getting the same dose as everyone else.

On if he is giving the quarterbacks anything they haven’t seen before…
When you install there is going to be stuff and an adjustment period every day, and as they install the defense will see things and as the defense installs the offense is going to see things. It’s up to the rules and coming down to the rules, and since you’re not game planning, you’re liable to see anything from either side of the ball. You kind of playing by feel a little bit, but nothing they can’t handle on either side of the ball.

On if Darnold is fully caught up after missing three practices…
It’s hard to tell. That is hard to tell. I think he’s caught up on what he does offensively, as well as Josh and Teddy, but the defensive packages go in every day too. So, he’s not seeing the base, he’s just getting caught up on the base three days that the defense has put in and get used to seeing everything. But like I said, he is sharp and he studies and I don’t see him behind as far as catching up mentally.

On if he is worried about the back and forth between Terrelle Pryor and some of the Redskins players…
No Coach Gruden, he coaches his team well. It’s just talk and banter. We are going down there for them to make us better, hopefully we make them better and we can get better as a team. Anything else to me, is nonsense.

On if there is anything wrong with Cairo Santos…
No, just a little tight. We just hold him out a few days here and there, no different than anyone else in camp.

On if he is doing fewer field goal drills than previous years and why…
We do a lot before practice and we do a lot in walkthru and recap practice. So, we do a lot of things that you don’t see with the kickers that goes into that we don’t kick as much out here, but we understand there is a competition and we get things done.

On Brent Qvale getting time at left tackle…
We are moving a lot of guys that are back there. Ben (Ijalana) we are moving around, (Dakota) Dozier we are moving around, (Ben) Braden we are moving around, Harrison we are moving around, so it is good this time of year to alternate those guys and see what they can and can’t do. If you’re not a starter it is pretty much the more you can do.

On if there is a chance the quarterback rotation could be: McCown, Bridgewater then Darnold…
There is a chance, yes.
