On how Sam Darnold is progressing…
He’s progressing. I have to see the film. Goal line, we can’t hit the quarterback so some of the throws may not have been throws but he’s picking up everything. He just has to keep working, and as he sees things every day, as well as the rest of the quarterbacks, they’ll get better.
On if indoor or outdoor practice changes what gets accomplished…
No, it’s the same thing. Camp is camp whether in or out. It’s just rain. Had it not been thunder and lightning we would have stayed out.
On if it was a rest day for Steve McLendon…
Yes.
On the competitive nature of the goal line…
It’s great. I think it’s great for our guys. We just have to start out that way and play throughout. Not that practice was bad, but when they get going, we can’t have live periods all the time, but when they get going on each other at the end of the day we’re still the same team, but the competitive nature was good today.
On the competition among the tight end group…
It’s tough. We got a lot of competition there. Those guys work hard every day. From top to bottom it’s probably the deepest we’ve had since I’ve been here. I look forward to them competing every day and getting better.
On Lorenzo Mauldin…
He’s healthy, and he’s not on the ground as much obviously. I think he’s a little stronger than when he came back. As the season progresses and the preseason, it’ll be good to see him in games and see what he can do.
On Mauldin not being on the ground as much…
Not pushed around. He’s just on the ground, stumbling a lot first year, and trying to cut around the corner, and he had a bad ankle at that time so that had something to do with it. He’s healthy. He has hit feet under him, so he’s playing.
On Isaiah Crowell’s performance this week…
It’s pretty hard when you’re not tackling the backs. He’s a good football player, just playing against him. We’re glad we got him. He can catch the ball better than anybody can catch the ball, and we know he’s a good runner. We look forward to him getting better.
On the dynamic between Kacy Rodgers and Kacy Rodgers II at camp…
For father and son it’s great. You get to spend time around your kid when you work all day. The hours that coaches work, for your son to be here all the time, is outstanding. I’m sure it’s surreal for Kacy (Rodgers). He can probably answer that question better than me. I’ve known little Kacy (Rodgers II) for quite a while, and he’s a great kid.
On the concern over favoritism…
It happens all the time. When you have a son, and he grows up like a coach and he ends up going in the NFL, there’s a chance he could be on your team. He earns his keep, and Kacy (Rodgers) is very fair, and Kacy (Rodgers II) works hard.
On differences for the Green & White Scrimmage…
We’ll probably have more team periods, more of a scrimmage-like atmosphere, as far as moving the ball as opposed to just different periods. We’ll move the ball at certain times. We may start at the minus-35, but we’ll have a fringe period, maybe a red-zone period, start at mid-field, just different parts of the field for us to get different practice at certain things.
On if it will be more of a practice than a scrimmage…

On if Parry Nickerson hurt his hamstring…
I heard he tweaked one. I have to go inside to see how bad.
On what kept Thomas Rawls out…
Just sore.
On if Quincy Enunwa’s hand injury is serious…
It’s been sore, so we wrapped it and kept him out a few days.
On if officials have been in to talk about the new helmet rule…
We’ve had them in, and they’re coming in again. We teach it the right way and they play the right way. It’s really teaching football to be played the right way. There are going to be hard collisions, but if the helmet’s up, and you have to keep the helmet out of the way and hit with the shoulder, which most of the team do all the time, there’s an occasional head-to-head when someone’s putting their head down, but we don’t teach it any differently. We feel like we’ve been teaching it the right way the whole time.
On if there will be further education about the rule…
We understand the rule and the education of it. I think it’s more for the officials to call than the teams to have. We understand what the ruling is, but again we’re teaching it the right way, and we’re not trying to teach it that way at all, so it shouldn’t affect us. There may be a mistake here or there but we try to avoid that as much as possible.
On if he has any questions about in-line with the helmet rule…
In-line is going to be tough, because their closer to the line, and I don’t know if we have enough referees to call all that. That’s going to be tough depending on blocking schemes, and stunts, and maybe some incidental contact, but that’ll be tough to call. They still don’t teach the linemen on either side of the ball to put their heads down. That’s what they’re really looking for.
On Leonard Williams becoming more noticeable this camp…
Well, he has been noticeable since he come on campus, but he is working hard and he is a lot stronger this year. He is a lot quicker. Again, mentally going into your fourth year the game has slowed down for him, so he understands blocking schemes a lot more.
On if there is a chance Terrelle Pryor plays Saturday…
We will see. We haven’t carved it out yet. We are just bringing him along slow, we’re not trying to rush him in there, but he is getting back to normal and doing some good things, so we will see how it goes.
On Marcus Maye’s progress…
He is making progress. Again, he is in the same boat as Pryor. He is coming along slowly. We’re not trying to rush him back. He is getting some reps in and we will go from there.
On if any of the tight ends have stood out to him so far…
Not yet, I think they are all doing a decent job and I think that is going to be a tough call and that will be one of the tougher position battles that we are going to have to judge going in. We will continue to monitor it, but I think all of those guys are doing well.
On Eric Tomlinson’s next step…
Well, we work on him. We work on all of them being a complete guy, but Tomlinson played well for us last year. He is kind of our rock, and he is solid this year. He is really our unsung ‘Steady Eddy’ guy.
On how he envisions the running back workload…
It is too early to tell right now. We haven’t played a preseason game yet, so we will play some games and we will sort that out as it goes.
On if he thinks Jordan Leggett will play Saturday…
Still too early to tell, I will see how he is feeling and see what it looks like tomorrow.
