New York Jets Transcript – Head Coach Todd Bowles, 7.28

On if Elijah McGuire has a fractured foot…

Yes he does.

On how long McGuire is out…

No timetable right now.

On if McGuire will need surgery…

I don’t know yet. We will see.

On what he likes about Alfred Morris…

We are taking a look at a couple of guys today, just doing due diligence. No decision has been made one way or the other.

On if they will add a running back…

We may, we will see. We have enough right now. We have a couple of fullbacks that can do certain things. Depending on the roster, we may or may not.

On how tough the situation is with McGuire…

I am sure it is tough for him going into his second year. Anytime someone gets hurt it is a tough break, but he is a hard worker and we expect him back as soon as he is ready.

On if McGuire is a short-term Injured Reserve candidate…

I don’t know yet.

On if McGuire’s injury was a non-contact injury…

He just cut.

On if there is any update on Sam Darnold…

No.

On what point Darnold is unable to play in the first preseason game…

I am just worried about the guys that are here, like I said. The guys that are here are going to play and we are going to get ready for the season. When he comes in, he comes in.

On how long he can go before adding another quarterback because of reps…

We will see. We will play it by ear. Right now we are okay, but we have plan B, and we have some things in place. We will just play it accordingly.

On the number of reps for the quarterbacks…

They get their practice in. There may be more running plays than others, but they get their practice in and they get their throws in and we move forward.

On if he is disappointed with having to deal with Darnold’s holdout…

It is part of the business. We deal with something every year. I am not disappointed. I have a bunch of guys right here to coach to get ready for the season, and that is what we are doing.

On today’s practice…

I have to watch the tape and see it. It is the second day. Obviously you can get some kinks out, and they get their feet underneath them. It will be another adjustment in pads tomorrow, but we are moving forward positively and they have some recall from the spring, so that has been good.

On how the quarterbacks have looked the first two days…

It is early, (but they have) recall from the install. We will look at the film and evaluate them everyday and go from there.

On what he looks forward to in the first day of pads tomorrow

Obviously you have to get fundamentals and technique down because you haven’t had them on in a long time. The individual periods will be more or less what we are looking for as far as stepping the right way, getting the right block, getting the right fit and doing the right things. The team stuff will come, but individually we have to make sure we are teaching it the right way and make sure they are doing it the right way.

On how much time they have spent on the rule changes…

We don’t need to spend any time on the helmet rule because we teach it the right way. We don’t teach anyone to duck their head. Obviously the kickoff has some gymnastics and those are more of the game planning things as far as that is concerned. Yes, the rule changes, we talk about and we meet on them every night, and we will move forward from there as far as them knowing what is happening on the field and what they can and can’t do.

On if he is mindful about concussions happening early in camp and what is he doing to help…

We are mindful of concussions in general. Football is a violent sport and we try to play it as safe as possible. Keeping the head up and trying to keep your head out of the game like we are teaching and just using your shoulder and keeping your head up and being aware and that is the best you can do. When two guys are going full speed and play it the right way there is always a chance of that, but we try to coach it the right way and play it the right way.

On the progress of Marcus Maye and Terrelle Pryor…

They are out here every day. It has been a day and a half now, two days as far as practice is concerned. They are moving well. We will continue to monitor it as it goes, and when the time is right we will put them out there.

On if Quincy Enunwa is full go after not wearing the red jersey today…

He didn’t have the jersey on today, but full out of pads and full in pads (is different). We will take it day by day.

On what went in his decision to get rid of Courtney Upshaw…

Nothing. We had (Shaneil) Jenkins that we had some prior interest in, and in the type of scheme that we play he is probably a better fit.

On if Thomas Rawls could fill some of McGuire’s roles…

Well, we will get the pads on. Obviously Rawls has been a heck of a player in Seattle and he came in the spring and he made an impression. He works hard, he has a great personality, he is very smart and he loves the game. Those are the types of players you like to coach. We just have to see him with the pads on and see how he progresses.

On Jamal Adams’ voice in a training camp setting…

It’s camp. It is a great setting because he is always one of the talkers in the group. Like I said in the spring, we have about eight guys on the All-B.S. Talking Team, but he can back it up and it’s fun and it is talk the right way and he speaks all in jest and it’s part of the game and he enjoys playing the game and we love having him talk.

On what he has liked about Doug Middleton…

Before he got hurt, Doug was coming on. Obviously he is a swing player, he can play both (safety) spots. Anytime you’re a swing player, that makes you valuable. He is just in the right space at the right time, so it will be interesting to see once the pads go on if he continues to progress.
