Despite a double-team, Tina Charles made a tough bank shot with seven seconds remaining to tie the game at 77 apiece for the New York Liberty. However, the Washington Mystics’ Elena Delle Donne made sure there was no overtime. Her three at the buzzer gave the Mystics (10-5) an 80-77 victory over the Liberty (4-10) at the Capital One Arena on Thursday night.

The contest saw 11 lead changes and eight ties, as neither team could build a lead larger than nine. It was the eighth Liberty game this season settled by six or fewer points, and it was their second defeat this year by way of a buzzer-beating three.

Epiphanny Prince led New York with 21 points, her season-high, making eight of her 13 attempts from the field. The guard had scored just 23 points total in her first five appearances this season.

Charles contributed 18 points for the Liberty, along with seven rebounds and six assists. Kia Vaughn joined Prince and Charles in double figures, scoring a season-high 16 points. Her previous high was eight, a total she exceeded in the first half.

Both teams cashed in from the free throw line, missing just one apiece, but Washington had 22 attempts compared to New York’s 11.

The Liberty have now lost four games in a row, and six out of their last seven. They have a quick turnaround, as they take on the Chicago Sky at home tomorrow evening. The game is set to begin at 7:30 p.m. (ET) at the Westchester County Center.
