It was a rainy Thursday afternoon in Brooklyn, and Nets stars Jarrett Allen and Rondae Hollis-Jefferson were at the Child Development Support Corporation to help to bring smiles to the faces of families in need by dishing out some food, instead of Basketballs.
As a part of the ‘Green Sidewalk’ Food Distribution and Charity Stripe Initiative Allen and Jefferson interacted with a massive crowd of people all in a single file, all collecting much needed food for the day. Laughter, smiles and even dancing was seen as the spirit in the room was electric.
The Nets and Key Food through the second-annual Charity Stripe Initiative, have secured more than 9,000 pounds of food donations that will provide more than 27,000 meals for Brooklyn Families in need.
Through the Charity Stripe Initiative, Key Food and valued partners pledged to also donate food or household goods for every free throw the Nets made at the Barclays Center in the 2017-18 season. The Nets sank 694 free throws this season, making the donations more than 12 pounds of food and household supplies per shot.
The Green Sidewalk initiative, meanwhile, delivers fresh produce to areas with high rates of food insecurity, but limited pantry capacity, and distributes it the same day. This is just one of the ways that the Food Bank of New York puts and end to Hunger in the New York City Area.
Hunger is a big issue in New York, and Food Bank has always done a tremendous job in combating that issue leading the campaign to stamp out hunger for the past 35 years. Nearly one in five New Yorkers relies on Food Bank for food and other resources. Thanks to teams like the Brooklyn Nets and companies like Key Food and the Charity Stripe Initiative , fewer and fewer families will go hungry.
