Today, the New York Jets, United Way of Essex and West Hudson, Verizon and students and educators from Roosevelt Middle School teamed up to celebrate the digital character education program, Character PlaybookTM which is powered by digital learning innovator EVERFI Inc. and presented by the NFL and United Way. The New York Jets, UWEWH and Verizon bring this web-based program to schools throughout the Essex and West Hudson area, reaching over 5,000 students since the program’s inception.
Roosevelt Middle School Character Playbook students were selected to visit with New York Jets linebacker Darron Lee at the Jets facility based on their outstanding work and completion of the program. Students had the chance to ask Darron questions about character development and healthy relationships through a student-led Q&A and also had the chance to show off their knowledge of the program in an interactive game of true and false led by Ebun Hill, Financial Empowerment Center Program Coordinator at United Way of Essex and West Hudson.
The event also included remarks from the school and concluded with students receiving certificates for their work in the course and Roosevelt Middle School receiving the Innovation in Character Education award presented by the New York Jets, United Way of Essex and West Hudson and Verizon. Marc Lawrence, Roosevelt Middle School Assistant Principal, accepted the award.
“The New York Jets are proud to work alongside United Way of Essex and West Hudson and Verizon to bring these critical life skills to students in our community, Jesse Linder, Director of Community Relations said. We are thrilled to host this event for the second year in a row with Darron. It is a great way for the students to reflect on, and celebrate, what they have learned throughout the school year.
“This course is empowering students across our footprint with the knowledge to make informed decisions which will benefit them for years to come” said Catherine Wilson, President & CEO of United Way of Essex and West Hudson. “The United Way of Essex and West Hudson is thankful for the New York Jets and Verizon’s partnership in bringing character into the classroom.
“As an educator of middle school aged children, it is refreshing to have a course to use in the classroom that encourages open conversations about character and healthy relationships said Marc Lawrence, Roosevelt Middle School Assistant Principal. “The Character Playbook program provides an interactive platform that exposes students to skills that will help them succeed in the future and I am thankful to the New York Jets, United Way of Essex and West Hudson and Verizon for making that possible.”
