The St. John’s Men’s Basketball team (12-16, 6-9 BIG EAST) is currently getting ready for one of the final two home games of the season, as the guys prepare to take on Georgetown on 2/25 at Madison Square Garden in a 12 pm game.
The Red Storm have won their last two BIG EAST Games at Madison Square Garden, with victories coming against Marquette and Seton Hall. The team has averaged 82.0 points, 8.0 blocks and 8.5 steals-per-game.
This will be the 107th meeting between St. John’s and Georgetown. The Hoyas are the third-most frequently played opponent. Georgetown has won four of the last five meetings, however the Red Storm were able to win five of the last eight contests at Madison Square Garden.
Leading the way is Marcus Lovett with his 18.0 points-per-game, while Shamorie Ponds follows with 17.5 ppg, and Bashir Ahmed with his 17.o ppg.
St. John’s is tied for fifth in the nation averaging 6.0 blocks-per-game. Tariq Owens (2.3 blocks-per-game) and Kassoum Yakwe (2.1 big) occupy the top two spots in the BIG EAST’s block chart.
What to Watch for:
This matchup will play a crucial role in determining the seeding for March’s BIG EAST Tournament, as the Red Storm and Hoyas are seperated by one game in the standings in eighth and ninth place, respectively. St. John’s enters the game with a 6-9 record in the BIG EAST Conference, while Georgetown holds a 5-10 mark.
Marcus LoVett (17.2 PPG) and Shamorie Ponds (17.1 PPG) continue to impress in their rookie seasons, leading the team while also ranking sixth and seventh in the conference, respecivley in scoring. The Duo also rank fouth and sixth among NCAA freshmen in scoring.
About Georgetown:
Georgetown has dropped four of its last five contests and most recently fell to DePaul, 67-65, on Wednesday at the Verizon Center. Jesse Govan scored a game-high 18 points, while Rodney Pryor added 14 points.
The Hoyas are 2-5 on the road in BIG EAST play this season. Georgetown won back-to-back road contests at Butler (Jan 28) and DePaul (Jan 31) but since then has lost its past two road games against nationally-ranked conference opponents Villanova and Creighton.
Rodney Pryor is the third leading scorer in the BIG EAST, averaging 18.1 points-per-game. The graduate transfer from Robert Morris also ranks second in the conference with 70 3-pointers.
