It was an intense battle between the St. John’s Men’s Basketball team (10-13, 4-6) and #24/22 Xavier (15-6, 5-3) that saw the Musketeers earn a 82-77 victory over the Red Storm in BIG EAST play at Madison Square Garen.

The Red Storm used a  furious second half push that saw the Johnnies trim a 15-point deficit to just two down the stretch, sadly they were not able to close out this game, though the effor and fight were shown.

Leading the way on the offense for St. John’s was Shamorie Ponds, who recorded game-high 23 points. The Freshman was able to reach the 20-point plateau for the  ninth time this season.

Marcus LoVett tallied 11 points and five assists, while Bashir Ahmed also added 11 points on 4-of-7 shooting and a 3-of-6 effort from beyond the arc to round out the double-figure scoring for the Red Storm.

One of the keys in this game was the rebounding efforts from Xavier, as the Musketeers outrebounded the Red Storm by a final of 45 to 26. The fight and the heart were shown by the Red Storm was something that can be used as the season goes along.

St. John’s will return to Madison Square Garden on Wednesday night, playing host to the Golden Eagles of Marquette at 7 p.m.
