The theme for the St. John’s Men’s Basketball (1-0) home opener was unselfish play and that this team is a family. It sure showed as the energy of the game and the pace was just the way one would hope for in the 100-53 victory over Bethune-Cookman.

One of the many highlights for Head Coach Chris Mullin, was the 21 assist and the overall impressive defensive performance of the team. Overall the Red Storm converted on 62.3 percent of their shots (33-of-53), the team’s highest total since the Red Storm sank 66.1 percent of its chances against Fordham on Dec. 7, 2013.

Everything clicked for St. John’s as those observing the game could clearly see the joy and passion that each player had for playing on the court. That energy was also given right back to the 4,371 that packed Carnesecca Arena for an amazing Home Openining Experience.

With the victory, the Red Storm extended its unbeaten streak in home-openers at Carnesecca Arena to 13, dating back to the 2004-2005 season.

Leading the way on the offensive side was Federico Mussini, who led the Red Storm with 20 points. , Marcus LoVett recorded 19 points, while two other players reached double figures as  Yankuba Sima and Malik Ellison each added 11 points.

St. John’s returns to action on Monday night, hosting the Binghamton Bearcats at 6:30 p.m. inside Carnesecca Arena. The game, which will air nationally on FS1, is a campus-site contest in The Battle 4 Atlantis.
